STB dead, or area problem?

I've got a few questions so please bear with me if they're repeats.

A little while ago (around 6pm) Sky One went black, tried turning over and turning back to no avail. Also noticed that many channels had gone blank (E4, E4+1, Sky News, ITV News, Channel 5) but many were fine (All the BBC channels [including digital ones], ITV3 etc.). So, I switched off the power and plugged the box back in. Now its stuck on that "Sorry to interrupt your viewing" message with the STB constantly stuck on "TUNE". Have tried turning off/on the power several times and also left it for 5/10 minutes but still not doing anything.

This is after having several recent problems with my STB, noticeably interactive has stopped working since the CR3 update (L3.1 - how I miss the old, quick purple EPG) - always comes up with a blue error box and gets no further. Red button services (like the Live 8 broadcasts, Wimbledon etc.) would load up the interactive page and then freeze - pressing TV would allow you to exit but you could never get any further. Didn't bring up a blue error message though, just didn't do anything. Couldn't see multiple video streams for different things, just the page layout. The EPG has always been really slow - and the timeout for it disappearing is unaffected by clicking up/down/left/right a lot of the time; so if you start flicking through channels on the EPG or just leave it, it'll always disappear after a few seconds.

I live in Frimley which I believe comes under the Guildford headend (though not sure). Tried phoning NTL about this a week or so ago (about the interactive/EPG problems) but they said there'd be a £75 callout charge, which we really can't afford to just have someone check the levels of the connection and probably do not much about at the time.

My question really is, what do I do?

We've also lost a load of channels in Fleet, so I think the problem is NTL's end.

Re: STB dead, or area problem?

In resetting the box does it need some soft of verification in some way; ie if there was a problem with NTL would it stop the STB from resetting? The serial number of my box is a Pace DI4001N - not sure what series it makes this. What's the chances if I speak to NTL about it they'll give me a nice new Samsung box, or a more recent Pace one?

Got the same problem here. Noticed Sky One was black when I switched over for the Simpsons. Now noticed other channels are black as well.
Just trying to reboot STB now, though it seems to be taking its time.

Really cross about this, first time I'd seen the New York episode of The Simpsons on since 9/11, my favourite episode and NTL cuts out just as it comes on. I know everyone always says that they're always doing the best they can, but after so many years its just problem after problem after problem... and yet Sky have consistently got it right. Makes you wonder.
