Windows no longer boots up

Hi guys,

I am on my wee bros computer at the moment.

I tried to tweak my windows XP SP2 machine so that I would have a new and different boot screen.

I was looking at www.ThemeXP.org and follwed what they said.

I made a back up of the ntoskrnl.exe file, and made a restore point.

however since following there advice on how to do thte tweak, I rebooted and no longer have windows booting up.

how can I use the restore point before the system boots up?
is it possible.

ik

EDIT: sorry it is the System32\Drivers\Ntfs.sys file is corrupt or missing.

Re: Windows no longer boots up

Re-boot from the XP cd and do a repair install?
Or use the instructions here
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;822800
to replace the file.

Re: Windows no longer boots up

thanks guys, but I have a bootloader to let me boot into windows or linux.

when I put in my windows cd, it says it is loading stuff, when it is finished it reboots, then goes to the boot loader, then crashes again at the same thing.

any ideas?

Re: Windows no longer boots up

Boot from the XP CD to get it to a DOS prompt? You need to replace the file which means getting to the recovery console really. Unless you can access the relevant drive from Linux?

i did replace the file, and it looks as if it was working, but it fails after the boot screen loads, reboots itself, but does the same.

I tried to overwrite my ntoskrnl.exe with my ntoskrnl_BackUp.exe by renaming the BackUp to thte normal, in linux, but it did not help.

Will it not even boot up in safe mode?

No, it loads all it needs to load up, then just automatically reboots.

Re: Windows no longer boots up

Unplug all of your USB connections and any other drives you may have and try a reboot then.

Failing that, check your Bios power management settings.

How are you online now????????

Re: Windows no longer boots up

Sounds like a repair install is needed. Bet you're glad you tweaked it now

Re: Windows no longer boots up

no need, I got it.

I went into the repair part of the windows disk, pressed r
then I went to the dos command,
I navigated to c:\windows\system32\
then I deleted ntoskrnl.exe
renamed ntoskrnl_BackUp.exe to ntoskrnl.exe

then rebooted in safe mode.

restorred my computer to the point i made before the f*** up
then restarted the computer in full mode.
