Question What is mdsdev.exe

Hi people, i have run a scan of hijack this and im currently doing a virus scan as well, but in my HJT log there was a reference to the above file located in

C:\WINDOWS\System32\mdsdev.exe

I have Googled it and it turned up no results. Is it Spyware or a virus or neither?

Can't find anything other than this page here, the response seems to be suggesting to delete it but I'm not sure about my translation.....

Yep, just checked the translation and it's saying to select the Hijack This option to delete it at next system start.

So i should just get HJT to delete the file at next system boot then? I just want to be absolutly sure that its safe to do so.

That seems to be the general advice from what I can find elsewhere on the net.

However, if you're asking me to confirm that it's absolutely safe to do so, and therby implying that I'll take the blame if your PC goes up in smoke......

Well if you want safety just rename the file in safe mode. If you want opinions based on what we can find the answer is as above, delete it, it's not recognised as a proper windows file so it should be relatively safe to remove.

Re: What is mdsdev.exe

Wayne,

Actually a quick google on the phrase "mdsdev.exe" does return just a single hit.

Assuming you typoed in the original post, Googling "msdev.exe" produces several hits worth looking at.

Re: What is mdsdev.exe

It would seem that Wayne posted the file name directly from his HJT log so it should be right.

Although the fact that he's been quiet for a while could mean that he's having problems

Or it could be he is still rebooting, you never know, he might have just been taking his time to fully research his options.....

If it's a virus/adware/keylogger etc. it would be logical to assume it would follow the trend if using a filename one digit removed from a legitimate or previously used one. It could easily be a varient of the "msdev" virus.

Google can automatically translate it, it's Portuguese.
