Sound Setup - Gaming
I cannot get my computer to do surround sound when gaming. Ihave Medal of Honour: Warchest (Allied Assault, Breakthrough, Spearhead), Call of Duty including United Offensive, and now Battlefield 2.
Initially I thought it was just the games I had were older and did not support, but I'm suie Battlefield 2 must support surround There certainly appear to be options in the game setup for it as hardware or software, yet all I get is sound from the two front speakers, nothing from the rear
I'm running windows XP SP2, fully patched with current drivers for the motherboard, etc. The motherboard is a Gigabyte K8NS Ultra 939 whcih has an on board sound card, controller nVidea(ooEA), codec ALC850, DirectX 9.0. Speakers are Creative Labs Inspire 5.1 5300 EAX.
I've checked the setup of my PC and as far as I can tell all appears to be normal. The PC runs a software application to detect which speaker plugs are connected "Realtek Sound Manager" which came with the motherboard. doing the hardware speaker tests all appears to be correct, in that sound plays from each of the 6 speakers in the correct turn. Similarly it says all the plugs are correctly connected via UAJ sensing (whatever that is).
Anyone got any thoughts. Thanks in advance.

Re: Sound Setup - Gaming
Go into the Control Panel, double click on "Sounds & Audio Devices".
Click on the Advanced button of the bottom of this new window.
What does it say?
BTW - some soundcard drivers will change your speaker settings to "headphones" when you plug your headset in.

Re: Sound Setup - Gaming
I am in the market for a good £50 soundcard, would prefer external for when I travel up North to use on my other rig up there.
Has to be 5.1 though

I'd recommend the afore-mentioned Audigy as a card but that cost me more like 120 and that was as cheap as i could find it!
For £50 in terms of creative you're looking at the live range but it's not a patch on the audigy. There is a 5.1 model though,

I buy most of my stuff from there and never had a single problem. Everything as described, ace price and prompt delivery.
Spose there's the odd thing that goes tits up as with everyone.

Overclock £49
..........Dabs are selling it for £59 so I would risk ordering it from overclockers

It says "5.1 surround sound speakers"
I don't use a headset, I've just got a USB freestanding mike for Teamspeak. That leaves the speakers free for the full suround sound effect, if only it would work

Re: Sound Setup - Gaming
Oh, well decided to give up on the onboard sound and take the recommendations to get a dedicated card.
Went and got the Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2ZS 7.1 that Rammy linked to from Overclockers. Depsite negative comments I ordered at 15:00 Thursday, by 16:00 I was emailed to say it was despatched, and having selected Royal Mail Special Delivery, it arrived today
Sound getting from it is excellent. Now I knwo why I kept getting shot from behind - couldn't hear bods creeping up.
Only really annoying thing. The price. bought it on Thursday at £44.95 +VAT. Toady, this week only it's £38.95 + VAT

There's no need to be vindictive about it, one shot is usually enough. Oh I get it your gun just fires blanks

Rip off some of the chips with a screwdriver, then send it back to overclockers saying it's faulty and demand a refund. Then just order a new one at the lower price Of course you'll prolly lose whatever saving you'll make in sending back the 'faulty' one and getting the cheaper one delivered
