Re: Firefox wins Product Of The Year
Not surprising really - Before i switched to firefox i bought Spysweeper for my PC and used it regularly, but since changing to Firefox i stopped using it when i rebuilt my PC a few months back i didnt even bother installing it again despite the fact that i have a valid subscription for it. However i got a mail the other day telling me my subscription was about to run out and that V4 had been released so i stuck it on again to try it out and see whats new.
Ran a spyware sweep of my system and you know what it found - nothing, nada, zip, zero....
Thats why i use Firefox.

Re: Firefox wins Product Of The Year
I think it is deserved.
Firefox has done well to grab quite a bit of market share from IE, and it is a real nice piece of software. Brilliant extensions. So portable too, Windows, Apple, Linux, anything... And a lot of extensions are cross-compatible too.

If PcWorld gave me an award, I'd get a refund and get it 30% cheaper online

Remember, Firefox is NOT as secure as everyone appears to think. In the last six months of 2004, 20 security vulnerabilities were found in Firefox, as opposed to 13 in IE.. OK, a higher percentage were serious in IE,

I just posted it as a reminder to be careful. In the last four years, I have seen spyware twice on my system. Even though the last time was in 2003, I still sweep my systems regularly.

Re: Firefox wins Product Of The Year
No spyware here from using Firefox.
In fact the only spyware I've had this year was from having to use IE to view a badly coded site.

Re: Firefox wins Product Of The Year
The only times I caught spyware, IE was at least potentially involved (once, it did come from IE, the other time I don't know, but IE was the most likely candidate for blame).
I wasn't arguing IE is secure...

Re: Firefox wins Product Of The Year
My only concern with Firefox is the lack of anti-spyware programs out there that lack the ablilty to scan Firefox for tracking cookies.
Other than that - i dont have a problem with it.

That's a good point.
In fact it's only a text file so you could just look inside it - I may make myself a web app which does this and checks for known "dodgy" domains.

Soywareblaster ( http://www.javacoolsoftware.com) can block firefox from installing spyware.

Re: Firefox wins Product Of The Year
Yeah, but sometimes these programs block stuff they shouldnt and your left wondering in situations when somthing dosent work as it should whether its this program or that program thats blocking something and causing the issue.
So i would prefer, at least as far as cookies are concerned, to take a post rather than a preactive response.
One thing i have done however is under Tools->Options in the Privacy tab under cookies, is to accept cookies from the orginating web site only.
So far - no issues of note.
Still, its difficult to gauge how effective that method is.
