Explorer 4000DVD STB Problems

I had a PACE STB which worked fine with my TV, DVD recorder and VCR until today when it failed showing error message Errl. Telewest replaced it with an Explorer 4000DVB but despite the SCART and RF connections being identical I can't get a cable TV signal from the STB to the DVD or VCR. The STB TV SCART output is connected direct to the TV. The STB VCR SCART input/output is connected to the DVD recorder then from the DVD's other SCART to the VCR. The RF connection follows the same route except it loops back from the VCR to the TV. I can get a aerial RF signal on the DVD and VCR but lose audio when the STB is switched to standby.

This setup worked fine with the PACE STB but doesn't with the Explorer and I don't understand why. All the cables are fine and connected properly. I also can't tune in a cable RF output signal from the STB on the TV or the DVD or VCR. Does this mean the STB is faulty? Or has the Pace STB damaged my DVD and VCR when it failed?

Re: Explorer 4000DVD STB Problems

Not sure if the PACE STB caused the problem, but if you find it has PLEASE contact me. I'm in the middle of a case of a PACE STB causing a fault on my TV, and we could back each other up if the box caused the fault. Telewest will tell you it is impossible for the box to cause a fault with any other equipment connected to it. I can't say 100% that the box caused my problem, but they both died at exactly the same time .

Re: Explorer 4000DVD STB Problems

I've thoughly checked the DVD recorder and VCR and they're both working ok. It's having the STB in the loop that's causing all the problems. The Telewest "engineer" came today and after fumbling about and several phone calls eventually remembered that the Explorer STB has a hardware fault that stops it working with DVD recorders! The Pace STB he had in the van worked fine but we couldn't have it, another one is on order. What could possibly cause a STB to be incompatible with a DVD recorder? Mind you the Pace STB is the only infrared controlled item I've ever come across that's incompatible with energy saving lightbulbs! Switch the light on and the remote control no longer works.

The SA 4000 STB has a bug (feature?) where copy protection is permanently enabled on the output.
