Excel linking to Word

hey everyone,

this will seem a bit strange, but bear with me.

I have, in work, a lot of documents e.g. 1.doc, 2.doc, 3.doc.
I also have index.doc which has all of the above docs as links to their respective documents. I hover the link hold Ctrl and click left mouse button and this takes me to the document I am looking for.

All links work in the index.doc file.

in Excel, which is for retaining these file for training purposes, I want to link the links from the index.doc and copy this link to the Excel worksheet.

so I copy the hyperlink (with right clicking and choosing that option) from the word document, and paste in Excel. everything seems fine.

I can also copy these cells which have the link in them and copy them to another worksheet & book with no probs.

but recently in work I am not offered the copy hyperlink when in word, so because I have already used the links before (which work), I thought I could just copy the cells with the hyperlinks, but all it does is copy the contents, not the actual link (earlier this week it worked fine), it looks like a link but it goes nowhere, so I get an error.

is there anyway I can fix this?

the only way I can see is to edit the link in excel to where the link is going to, but this is too time consuming.

I have tested at home but I can do everything correct at home, but I am offered the copy hyperlink.

the example is small, I have over 100 documents for training purposes, which are all linked in the index, then I copy from the index to excel on to individual work sheets for normal personel, and another workbook, for senior personel.

I don't know why you aren't getting the copy shortcut option any longer

When I put links into Excel I use this format
=HYPERLINK("\\path to document\filename.doc",displayname)

This may make things easier for you, as you can construct these enmass [I use a combination of karen's dirprint (karenware) Excel itself and a good texteditor] and then paste the result straight into Excel.

Re: Excel linking to Word

Initial thought - hyperlinks lose their edit commands if there's a spelling or grammar error in the text. Check to see if that's the case (wavy red/green underlines).

Are they still recognised as Hyperlinks (click and follow the link)?

Re: Excel linking to Word

as I said earlier, I can do this ok at home, but work is a problem.

the links are not changed when they are tested from word, but copying the hyperlink, does create the text to change from word to excel, e.g.
link in word value: Spinal training.doc
link in excel value: file///C:\training folder\SPinal training.doc

after clicking this works, then I can rename the link to just Spinal training.doc in excel and this also works.

but I have to do this all the time, which I should not have to do.

I work in a sports centre were we have training constantly, so all of the links have been used once from word to excel, for at least one coleague, so copying the link should work.

the formulae for the =hyperlink, does this put the link in the cell and them the cell can be copied over more easily?

I have just highlighted the link in word, copy hyperlink, then pasted into a cell.

Re: Excel linking to Word

although copy and copy hyper link look to do the same, from the stest i have done the results are different however both still work. Copying hyperlink from word and pasting into excel does just that, however copying anf then pasting into excel seems to put a single quote make before the hyperlink

Are the versions of word and excel you are using at home the same as you are using at work?
