VAT on internet connection

Greetings ...

If I use my internet connection (3MBit) for my own business (I know, lets ignore terms and conditions for a moment) - there is nothing to stop me claiming the VAT back if I am VAT registered is there?

What I am getting at, is that as far as the VAT man is concerned if it is used legitimately for business then despite the fact it is marketed as a 'domestic' service that should not be a problem?

thx

Mark

Re: VAT on internet connection

If you look closely on your NTL bill it will probably say (as it does on mine) "This is not a VAT invoice". You would have to contact NTL to get the proper VAT invoice. Of course, if you do that then they'll want to know why a domestic user wants a VAT invoice and perhaps recommend that you pay for the business service instead (which would then cost you loads more for nothing much extra).
I think you'd be better off not bothering, forget claming the VAT back, and just treat it as a non vat expense against your profits with the invoice bill as it is.

Or of course you could always just pay for the business package....

Re: VAT on internet connection

If you are running a business from your own home, you can claim a part of the bill as you can for electicity, gas and telephone but there are a number of rules you need to follow.

Re: VAT on internet connection

Imagine you only use the connection for domestic reasons.

Suppose your employers will subsidise it so that they can email you at home, but only if you provide them with a VAT invoice .......

Re: VAT on internet connection

OK, playing devil's advocate, If ntl's bill is "not a VAT invoice" yet includes an amount for VAT, even as a domestic user, why should I pay the VAT element of that bill if ntl arent invoicing me for it

Re: VAT on internet connection

Just ask ntl for a vat invoice - they must provide one, without question as to why.
