Victoria Cross awarded
Quote:
A YOUNG soldier who enlisted in the Army less than four years ago became a member of the most exclusive club in the world yesterday after being awarded the Victoria Cross for exceptional bravery in Iraq.
Private Johnson Gideon Beharry, 25, is now one of just 14 living recipients of the award which he received for saving the lives of 30 comrades under remorseless attacks from grenades and machinegun fire in the volatile city of al-Amarah, north of Basra. Only 1,355 have been awarded, many of them posthumously.

Re: Victoria Cross awarded
You do have to give him full respect.
It does make you wonder thougth as I'm sure things like this happen all the time in the armforces with no mention, if its because of the bad things that happened with the beatings that there trying to 'flower up' our Army?

Dont get me wrong as I say full respect to a brave solider. But is this the only time this has happened since 1964? Which was the last time a VCs was give out? I'm sure there are many soliders that have been brave and looked out for there comrads, its part of the job. Look at the brarvo 2 zero team and what they went though and they got nothing.

Agreed, you cant win wars without comradship, teemwork and extreeme bravery on the part of soldiers, so why no others ?

Well the last two recipients were in the Falklands war and they were awarded poshumously. It is very rare for there to be a live recipient of The VC.Thankfully we have avoided most all out wars since the 50's as the VC is awarded for

only for acts of extraordinary courage under enemy fire

I suggest you read the article a little closer and just accept that not just anyone gets a VC.It being the highest Military Medal that is awarded it is treated with the UTMOST RESPECT by everyone and would not be allowed to be cheapened in a face saving operation by any government because it's not in the government's power to influence it.
Incog.
PS It might be a worthwhile few minutes actually researching ALL the recipients of the VC since it's inception.

Re: Victoria Cross awarded
Private Johnson Beharry really deserves his VC, he is very modest and clearly one of the best a credit to the nation.
Hopefully, someone could persuade the Mayor of the City of London, to give him the freedom of the city.

Yep daily occurance that a seriously wonded man, drives a van thats on fire straight through the middle of an ambush
Really though makes you feel good about the country knowing we still have people like that!

Re: Victoria Cross awarded
Gotta say I'm totally made-up for the guy.
When I joined up in '88, part of my basic training was learning the history of my unit (Royal Engineers). During which we where taught about the bravery and sacrifice that previous Engineers have endured. So considering the criteria needed now adays to qualify for the recomendation for the VC, you can rest assured it is deserved in few cases.
What stands out even more than the gong, to me anyway, is the face that after being seriously wounded, this brave soldier still wants to stay in the Army. I truely hope he can, given that he still suffers with his now healed wounds.
