Actiontec:NTL Wireless Bundle

Hi,

Has anyone used this wirless networking kit with the NTL Broadband connection at home?

I've seen it on dabs for £95 and with it being specifically for NTL thought it would be worth going for.

Anyone used it / opinions on it?

Thanks

I'll have a look around, and see what I can find. Might just go for the one I mentioned above...

Re: Actiontec:NTL Wireless Bundle

I use a linksys router with two laptops runnning XP and it is all very easy. The only problem i had was with the firewall trying to block access between the two computers. It needs properly setting up

From what I hear, the bundle is ok, but it is not specifically for NTL - it's just the one that NTL recommend ([cynical mode] probably get a cut of the profit as well [/cynical mode]).
There are loads out there, and everyone has their favourites (I use linksys routers and netgear wireless kit myself).

When you do set it up, be aware of the XP firewall (assuming you use XP) which can be a bit of a bugger to sort out.. (plenty of info in the threads on this forum about that).

£95 is not a bad price, and all the wireless kit should be compatible, so if you decide to add a new wireless device you are not tied to the same supplier..

HTH

We are offering for £69.99 just now. Never used it but it appears to be going alright so far.

Just to clarify - you guys are offering the Actiontec Wireless Bundle for £69.99?

I also have a few questions about it that I would be grateful for answers to:

Is any networking knowledge required to set the Actiontec system up?

Are there any wireless kits that aren't compatible with NTL broadband?

With a range of 300 feet, what happens if your neighbours install the same system? Couldn't this cause chaos?

Thanks

Hi there. & to the site.

I'm not sure if you're aware, but you're replied to a thread that is a year old!

The ntl/Actiontec info can be found here: http://www.ntlworld.com/actiontec/.

HTH.

A limited amount of knowledge is required, but there are loads of articles on this forum about wireless setups

Any wireless setup should work, but make sure it is a cable/DSL router, not an ADSL modem/router, as this will not connect to the CM/STB

It can, but as long as you set it up correctly (change SSID etc) you should not see any issues.

Re: Actiontec:NTL Wireless Bundle

If you want a secure Wireless router, avoid the ntl one. It does not have the security features that the latest linksys, D-Link and Netgear routers has.

As an example, you can't turn off SSID (This broadcasts the network name, something you want to avoid as anybody within your wireless range with the appropriate wireless network card can try and hack) on the ntl router, and finding and enabling the security measures it has got is not that easy either. As Paulyoung666 has said, look around there are some bargains to be had in better and more secure equipment.
