Why can't I find a decent ADSL provider?
It all started a long while ago with Pipex refusing to investigate a problem with severe packet loss, it went on for months so I decided to switch to ...
Nildram, the packet loss problem went away as soon as I was activated but they then decided to start billing me 100's of pounds a month in error, after a few months I got sick of constantly having to phone them to re-credit my account and got a migration code to move to ...
plusnet, after severeal weeks of not hearing anything, I called them up and they had not bothered to put the order through to BT, no apology, nothing, so I cancelled the order and moved to ...
one.tel, after months on end of continous problems I decided to cancel as I had a spare phone line, I followed their instructions and assumed all would be well, I then signed up to
Wanadoo ... who accidently cancelled my account and arranged for BT to cease my line claiming there was no physical way to reverse it and I'd just have to live without broadband until the cease was complete
Not wanting to live with ADSL I checked my other line and in their incompetence, one.tel hadn't bothered to cancel my account, so, I got that reinstated just as wanadoo was disconnected
Unfortunately the service has been degrading over the last few weeks, today I can only get to a few select site's, I can't FTP anywhere, can't browse to any secure sites and my download speed has degredated severely, I call up their indian call centre, after 25 minutes trying to convince them that I really was a customer her solution to my problem was to change my homepage in Internet Explorer from google.co.uk to onetel.co.uk and couldn't offer further advice. I tell her that I've tried browsing on the same PC using dial up and don't experience problems, in fact, it's probably faster ... she say's BT will "check my PC" ... nice, "are they going to come round and have a look?" I ask her, she say's "Yes, in the next 3 day's" .. great, I'll get the chocolate digestives out ready.
In the meantime however I decided to give Pipex another try on their 2 meg service, I call them when the cease line was complete on my spare telephone line and was told, yeah, that's fine, you'll be live by the 5th, on the 5th I call them they say "you've got an incompatible service on your line", I tell them that the cease has been done, that I'd already called them to tell them this and had been told by provisions who had spoken to BT that everything was fine and it'd all go ahead. I call them again today to be told "you've got an incompatible service on your line", I run through the same story to some disinterested Doris who tells me the same thing again, the order will be put through to BT.
I give up! With regards to broadband I declare myself the unluckiest person alive.

Shouldn't be a bad line, I had a brand spanking new one put in purely for ADSL, and I'm only 100 yards or so from the exchange.
