Question High pitched squeek from PC!

Yep, you read it right! My PC has been giving out a regular high pitched tone about every three seconds since turning it on this morning. The tone in coming from within the PC itself and not the speakers.

I've tried disabling the sound etc, but it makes no difference. Apart from being damned annoying it also worries me in case it's a warning for something.

Anyone got any pointers please to settle my nerves?

Thanks in advance.

Re: High pitched squeek from PC!

Sounds if the bearing in one of your fans is starting to wear out, you had best find out which one and replace it as soon as possible (unless it's the PSU fan, which I would recommend getting a new PSU).

Re: High pitched squeek from PC!

The PC is only two months old, so it's under warranty. Not too happy about taking of the back and poking about with the power on From the outside everything is very cool, in fact you can feel the fan blowing out cold air!

Most important thing is: am I risking damage?

Re: High pitched squeek from PC!

If it's under warranty then it's time to get the manufacturer to look at it. That noise could be anything from a fan failure to something on the motherboard or A.N. Other expansion card failing. It's not worth the hassle to try and find the fault yourself since opening the case will invalidate the warranty so get on the phone or email to your support people as soon as possible before it gets worse.

Re: High pitched squeek from PC!

Didn't realise it was under warranty, yeah I agree with the others it needs to go back to shop.

Thats if any shop is open to take it back at this time of year.

Re: High pitched squeek from PC!

I had it custom built and when I got it back I needed to open the back to fit in something (under the guidance of the Tech Support). Anyway, I've just opened it up again and there are three fans.

One for the hard disc, one in the motherboard (CPU?) and one in general. All are working, all is cool, but the sound appears to be coming from the motherboard area.

As said, this is the worst time of year for it to happen and if I have to be without it over Christmas it's going to be pretty miserable around my household

Re: High pitched squeek from PC!

Stop the fans very briefly with your finger and see if the noise stops with the fan, is it coming from the PC speaker?

Contact the shop or whoever built it, tell them that there is a high pitched noise coming from the motherboard area, if you can isolate it to a certain area of the board even better, and then ask them if they can sort it out now or if bringing it back to the shop in the new year would be better for them. It could be a component on the board failling and if so it needs replacing now rather than in a months time when it could fail and cost you data

Re: High pitched squeek from PC!

Its up to you, I'd definitely recommend taking it to the shop if its definitely brand new, it'll be in warranty and wont cost you anything.

More likely to be a capacitor on the motherboard.
