Question 2nd Hard Disk (HOW)??

I have a Dell 8400 (2 months old)
I also have a Maxtor 120GB USB2 Drive. This Drive FAILED this week. I dont think it died. Just the Power to it has. So I opened it up (removing the Sticker) & noew have it on my PC room floor.

I took a image of my Dell 8400 and the H/Disk.

How do I add this into my PC to see if I can Copy the bits I need? & then format it?

I have these inside my PC now:
DVD Rom
DVD+R
H/D 120GB
3 1/2 Floppy

But I want the 2nd H/D also. The Lead that goes to the H/D in Dell is different to the Conector on my Maxtor...

What should I do?

TIA

Re: 2nd Hard Disk (HOW)??

The easiest way to do it for now is to unplug one of your optical drives, make sure that the HDD is jumpered the same way as the drive you unplug (Master/Slave) and Plug it in, it should get automatically detected as such and windows should pick it up allowing you to retrieve any data you want. Hopefully.

Re: 2nd Hard Disk (HOW)??

Word of caution:

Do NOT press the top or bottom of it!! This can damage the drive.
Hold it from the sides, so then it can't get damaged.

The other HDD in your PC is a SATA drive (meaning it's faster, there for has a different cable to transfer the data quicker). By the looks of the picture, the cable you need is just below your hand, or is there no sockets available on it?

Thanks for the TIP on holding from sides I never knew that. Hope I have not already damaged it

The wire below my hand is a USB Ribbon to the Front Ports of my PC. (It has a USB symbol on the wire)

Will try swapping with DVD Rom. Cheers

I will reply as soon as I get home to test it

Re: 2nd Hard Disk (HOW)??

The Disk Drive worked in PC... It found Maxtor & it was in the My Comuter

The Hard Disk when selected shows that it is FULL (or as full as it was)
But when you try to open it it says "Needs to be Formatted"

Any ideas?

I have the same problem with a HDD, Maxtor also, keeps loosing its partition info, All I can suggest is that you use a recovery tool to grab back what you can then bin the drive.

Assuming you're running windows, I think the following will do the job (and it's free)

http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/...s/discwiz.html

Re: 2nd Hard Disk (HOW)??

As your PC is only two months old shouldn't you be phoning Dell to get it replaced or fixed?

Why would Dell fix it???
The Hard Disk that failed was a older Maxtor EXTERNAL drive. I wanted to add it to my Dell as the Power unit for Maxtor failed
