Question surround sound

Hello everyone, here goes with my first post.

Can someone give me a definitive answer to this;

Can you get surround sound from an NTL pace digi box?

My set up uses a SONY DAV -SB100 DVD Home cinema, NTL PACE box both connected via SCART and it plays the DVD's in full 5.1 surround sound, I can set it up to listen to NTL programmes through the speakers but I only get it through the front speakers, the 2 rear speakers have no sound.
I bought audio leads and connected the PACE box straight to the DVD this way but still no surround sound.

I have tried lots of different settings but I am starting to think this is just not possible with NTL. I read an earlier post that mentioned you only get 5.1 sound on sky plus movies, could someone expand on this, i.e. does this mean the PPV ones?

Re: surround sound

Hi & to the site.

The simple answer (from me anyway) is no, I don't think ntl broadcast anything in 5.1.

Re: surround sound

Thanks for the reply Neil, i guessed this was the case!

Does anyone know if there are any plans from NTL to provide this?

Re: surround sound

If programmes are encoded in dolby surround (can only think of the simpsons and malcolm in the middle off the top of my head) if you set your DAVS-b100 to pro logic 2 you should get surround sound.

Otherwise personally i would just leave it on that and it will do its best to make surround sound out of the 2ch signal.

AFAIK, there are no ntl boxes that have an optical/coaxial output so you cannot get DD5.1 from anything full stop and anyway, i think the sky movies channels are the only ones that broadcast in dd5.1.

For the UK, I'm guessing with the arrival of HDTV we may start to see programmes broadcast in DD happen

Thumbs up Re: surround sound

many thanks jtwn
I set the DAV SB100 to pro logic and I now have the 5 speakers going on the ntl signal. when watching footie all i get the main main sound stream through the front and the crowd noise through the rear ones, superb

Re: surround sound

Call me old-fashioned (or tight) but I still only have a Kenwood 7700 pro logic surround amplifier and the ntl analogue box but with the kenwood set to pro logic I get fabulous sounds out of it all down just two wires. sounds especially good as you say, from the football - although it would be better if I actually liked football !
