phone wiring

Is NTL (nee East coast cable) phone and socket wiring (colours etc) the same as BT's (colours etc)?

Why is the cable that is outside of the house black whilst the internal cables white. Did NTL (East Coast Cable) put them in protective sleeve?

Re: phone wiring

yes colour scheme is the same
A leg will be white with blue bands
B leg will be bkue with white bands

and for any internal wiring between extensions if you are putting them in new, then for simplicity follow the wiring scheme. if they are existing extns then follow what is already there as some one may have changed the wires used due to faulty wires in the cable.

when wiring extns the following connections are used

A leg is connector 5 on the krone strip
B leg is connector 2 on the krone strip
and you also use connector 3 to carry the ringing voltage from the master socket or previous extn using the orange with white bands wire.

The reason for the black cables outside and white inside is quite simple really. unless you have a white house the the black cable generally looks better outside and eventually blends in so you don't even realise it's there and for inside white is better as black cables can look pretty nasty. They are also two separate cables. the black cable will be a external cable with a protective sleeve to keep out the weather which will go through the exterior wall of your house and terminate on the rear of the master socket which is the demarkation point where the provider's responsibility stops. The white wire will be connected to the removeable face of the master to feed the extns. this wire is thinner so as not to look so obvious as it runs around the house and is always owned by the customer once it has been installed and is their responibility. hence the reason we can charge you to replace it if you damage it.

hope this was helpful to you.
