Dead Motherboard or Power help Please

A few evenings ago I went to turn of the childrens PC and the mouse was dead and the keyboard wouldn't work either nor would the reset button so I ended up turning it of at the switch.

Went to turn it on today and nothing, no clicks, no lights, nada. Swapped the power cord with the monitor (which did have life) still nothing.

This is an isolated system with no access to the net and admittedly at least 4 years old.

Thanks in advance for your help folks.

Sounds like a dead power supply, when you switch it on do you hear anything at all from the casing of the computer?

No but I do get noise from the speakers.

It was because it wouldn't switch off I thought it could be the motherboard but on further thought it could even be both

If the speakers are self powered from the mains, you may just hear the odd click or whatever, but, it does seem likely to be the PC's power supply.
A quick test would be to use a known working power supply, try this, see what happens.

Re: Dead Motherboard or Power help Please

A lot of power supply units have fans in them, normally when you power up you will hear the power supply unit fans turn on. Unless you fancy trying the power supply out of the working pc in the non working PC it's not going to be easy to tell which is faulty to be honest. One quick check would be to undo the casing of the PC that is not working and some motherboards have a power led on them. You could open the case and try listening to the power supply unit or look for a light on the motherboard. Odds are its the power supply but without trying a known functioning power supply in the non working PC you won't know for sure.

Thanks everyone

I will get Hubby to have a look on his days off (he did do a course on building PC's). Meanwhile an old CPU seems to be still ok (only lost 4 minutes) so we could probably try swapping the power over.
