Free Voicemail service launches in certain areas.....

Not sure if this has already been mentioned, apologies if my laziness has caused a duplicate thread.

Free viocemail service has been launced in all SMS areas as of 18/12/03, very similar to the free option offered by BT. It is currently only available in most original ntl areas.

Hi Macca, & thanks for passing on the info.

PS-What's an 'SMS' area?

It's the type of billing system that is used usually find that original ntl areas have that type of system.

Sorry, morning Neil. Thanks to those who rep'd me recently, you know who you are.

How would you go about activating the service?

More importantly do you happen to know if Teesside is one of those franchises that can recieve this service?

Just phone in to your local office and they will add it on. I think it may be ex CWC which would mean that it is not available but I am not absolutely certain. Sorry I couldn't give the exact info about your area but it can be hard to keep up if with who deals with what sometimes.

Just in case anyone is unsure of how the free voicemail works, see below:

-Free viocemail is a free, simple version of the paid for service
-You do not need a PIN
-Activate the service by contacting your Customer Service (as mentioned above)
- Once activated, you access the service by dialling 1571
- Touch Tone phone required to use this service

In know this may be basic stuff to most but you never know, and as you can tell the info above has come straight from marketing, not my words.

For info Teesside is original NTL. Having just spoken to customer services there is no free voicemail available
Or maybe nobody in marketing has told them that it is, but she did go & check

Hey where's my prize?

I suggested this (copy BT) in a nthw.com competition for ideas for new/enhanced services!

Because in this country someone only pays when a call completes - this means lots of extra dosh for ntl and BT. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets turned on by default for all users and they have to phone up to turn it off!

I'm glad you mentioned that, its really annoying when you phone someone and get their answer machine, but don't want to leave a message, like you said you get charged a connection fee (5pence?)
it all adds up, especially for the phone company.

There should be some sort of opt out asking if you want to connect or not? Its expecially annoying when phoning from a payphone, bang goes 20pemce, just to find out no one was in.

IF you dial 1571 without voicemail being provisioned, you get information on the free voicemail service (in glasgow anyway).

Here the system says "Hello", someone says a name like "Flipper Dilbert" and then the system says "Please enter your passcode". I wonder if this means it is still testing or I connect to someone elses voicemail box?

Re: Free Voicemail service launches in certain areas.....

Just for fun, I rang 1571, not signed up for any voicemail services.
No idea if I'm in an original NTL area or not (Swindon)

"Hello, welcome to the message centre"...
"Please wait while you are transferred"...
Beep beep beep - engaged tone!!!
