Assigning drive letters in XP

I currently have one hdd, which xp sees as drive "C" and a dvd which is "D", if I add another hdd xp will assign it drive letter "E" (I think/assume). Can I change the drive letters so the 2nd hdd is "D" and the dvd is something else. I'm sure this is possible and if so how do I do it?

Re: Assigning drive letters in XP

Not sure about XP home but try this

Right click my computer on your desktop
Click on manage
Under storage select Disk Managment
There you should be able to right click your drives and re-assign their letters.

I normally move my CD & DVD drives to Y: and Z: as I use network drives at home

Re: Assigning drive letters in XP

I'm not sure about XP but for earlier versions of Windows the HDD letters are always consecutive by default. This means that, if you pop in another HDD, all the DVDs and other driver-based drives will shift up one place.

To my knowledge you can assign any letter to any drive except the dive which has the operating system on it, which must remain the same.
The way to do it is Contol Panel - Admin Tools - Computer Management - Disk Management - Right click, Change drive letters. Just assign Xand Y for example to the drives you want to change, and then reassign the way you want them.

Sort of.
Assuming all hard drives have just 1 partition:

C: Primary master
D: Primary slave

Now put a drive in on Secondary master, and that becomes D: and D: becomes E:
