Unhappy House move means I need to uninstall - how???

Hi all

I've moved house to an area that I thought NTL didn't cover (though today their website tells me my postcode is in their area!)

I was very happy with my previous NTL broadband USB modem setup but I suspect that not having the bits connected to it is now causing me a few problems.

What I can't seem to track down is anywhere on the PC where I can *un*install the original NTL installation. Does it even exist? Where do I begin to look?

Needless to say I don't even have the original installation disk, though I could probably get hold of it if I spoke nicely to the present occupants of my old house.

All offers of advice and help gratefully received.

Hi annie1wannachat (thank heaven for copy and paste ) Welcome to the Nthellworld family

The ntl usb software will be in one of two places.

1. the add and remove programs list. Double click my computer, then control panel and then add and remove programs.

2. In the network panel. How to remove it depends on your version of windows. If its 98 and your back on dial up (heaven forbid) then the only network devices you should have there are - microsoft family log on - dial up adaptor - tcp/ip dial up adaptor. Any other entries can be removed.

I recomend that you post some more info on your setup before taking further steps.

Hi annie,

The best way to remove ntl's USB drivers is to run the uninstall software on the ntl CD - however, since you don't have this, you can download the uninstall program here. The USB drivers shouldn't be causing a problem though... Alternatively, if you mean CorrectConnect (and this could be causing you a problem), you can remove it through Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel.

Hope this helps!

Re: House move means I need to uninstall - how???

Thanks to both of you for your tips. I have already uninstalled Correctconnect (shame - it's a neat program!) because it was having kittens trying to cope without its USB umbilical cord. (terrible mixed metaphor).

My network settings are a bit complex due to having had a previous vpn installation on my pc which has never been removed. I've got the following showing up:

Client for Microsoft Networks
Microsoft Family Logon
Dialup adapter
Microsoft VPN adapter
NDISWAN>Microsoft VPN adapter
NetBEUI>Dial up adapter
and of course TCO IP adapter

My PC has been a bit poorly due to too many kids downloading too much rubbish, so I know it needs other attention, but I do want to remove the NTL programs if poss.

On an unrelated matter, do you know if it's possible to access NTL webspace over a non-NTL dialup? I've got all my websites on my NTL free webspace and I can't get Terrapin FTP to access it at all!

Re: House move means I need to uninstall - how???

Hi again!

That Network Stack looks perfectly normal, just run the uninstall program to be sure the USB drivers are removed. Since you've already removed CorrectConnect, that's all that the ntl CD installs on your computer. It does make some changes to the title bar of Outlook Express/Internet Explorer, but these are only cosmetic - there's plenty of documentation on how to remove it if you're up to editing the registry; Microsoft's advice on it is here.

Unfortunately, you can't access ntl's homepage ftp servers from outside ntl's network - although you can still access them over the web at your homepage.ntlworld.com address, and Save all the files! This is of course assuming your webspace account hasn't been removed - in which case they're gone forever!

I recomend that you remove all the entries that are not marked red. Having network adaptors that are not used will slow down the connection. Only remove these if you are no longer using the vpn and only conecting via dial up.
