hmm stange pings

Hi ..

can some one ping the following from the dos prompt

ash.unl.ac.uk

ionactive.co.uk

yahoo.com

I can do the last one but not the first two. The first one is a email server at an establishment which keep returning my email to it. The lack of ping from my end at least explains why this is happening ..

I can access the second address through IE - why can I not ping it ...

Not sure what is going on ...

thanks

MArk

Re: hmm stange pings

I'm sure someone will post the technical info on this but the simple answer AFAIK is that some sites are set up to specifically ignore the ping.

It's not that it doesn't reach them but simply the server is set up not to reply possibly to avoid denial of service attacks or whatever but that's just a guess.

Re: hmm stange pings

What does it display when it fails to ping the two addresses through the DOS prompt?

Microsoft(R) Windows NT(TM)
(C) Copyright 1985-1996 Microsoft Corp.
H:\>ping ash.unl.ac.uk
Pinging ash.unl.ac.uk [163.167.84.6] with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
H:\>

Microsoft(R) Windows NT(TM)
(C) Copyright 1985-1996 Microsoft Corp.
H:\>ping www.ionactive.co.uk
Pinging www.ionactive.co.uk [213.171.218.12] with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.

H:\>

If it looks like the above then this is normal, and would just indicate that the address is actually refusing to acknowledge the request for a PING reply the same as a firewall does.
