Big problem and I need help

OK The operating system is Windows XP and I had to re-install using a recovery/back up disc that came with the computer, that went ok but the bottom task bar including start button etc was not showing,no attempts to get it back was successful, someone pointed out to me that I had not installed SP2,so I did and the taskbar came back, and everything looked to be ok,that is until I tried to connect to the internet,it did it just once and once only, after that it just would not connect, broadband,(which is blueyonder 4Mb) is working perfectly OK,Ive tried it on another computer,Ive been through every help I can find and nothing works ....it was fine till I installed SP2 and then it went wrong,I thought about uninstalling SP2 but then I would probably lose the bottom bar again,I just cant win,I would really appreciate any suggestions ....

Ok, what's the PC, how are you connecting (ethernet or USB) are you running anything else or is it still a clean install and have you any firewall software running.
Have you checked your device manager screen for issues on the hardware side or your administration tools, event viewer for errors?

Have you tried a second recovery? The missing task bar was prob just a glitch and should by rights not happen again unless your recovery image is fubared

Re: Big problem and I need help

Its a Time PC and its connected via USB,I do have AVG installed but thats all at the moment, the windows firewall is shutdown for the moment ....there are no errors or anything showing anywhere, (I wish there was,to give me a clue) sometimes on boot up it does connect, but as soon as you use it for one time it somehow disconnects, and thats how it stays ....

Re: Big problem and I need help

Its not my pc,it belongs to my Daughter and its always worked OK prior to this episode,as far as Im aware all usb drivers are up to date...what caused to re-install was that the CD rom gave up the ghost, and had to be replaced,in order to run the Reload disk ....when the cd rom packed up,upon boot up we got this message one of your drives needs to be checked for consistency and this we let happen, but it reported no errors, but the problem was that was as far as it went it just froze on a black screen and nothing would let it go any further, booted about another half a dozen times, but it still got stuck at that point,so was left with no alternative but to use the reload disk, after doing that all appeared to be well, although the bottom bar was missing and it would connect to the internet at this point,so I thought I will istall SP2 and after I did that the toolbar came back, but the connections problem happened...since then I have tried it on a BT internet connection and it did connect to that, but only for just one action, then it stayed connected despite checking everything that could be checked ....

Re: Big problem and I need help

Is your new CD Rom setup (jumpers) the same way as the old one and in the same cable position as the old one? I would suggest another clean install but this time install all updates before installing any drivers if possible.

Re: Big problem and I need help

Does the machine have an ip address?

Open a command prompt by Start|Run and type in cmd

Then type ipconfig

If it does, the can you ping a website?

type ping www.cableforum.co.uk

If it doesn't reply, can you do an nslookup of it?

type nslookup www.cableforum.co.uk

If that doesn't work, do a traceroute to it to see how far your pc gets.

type tracert www.cableforum.co.uk

These should give you a bit more info on where your problem is.
