World of Warcraft + ntl

I started playing World of Warcraft 2 months ago and every so often, usually after turning in a quest or something else that causes moderate amounts of traffic between WoW and my computer, my network card that I use freezes and the network card requires disabling and re-enabling for it to work again. I connect to ntl through the network card to set top box method. My network card is an onboard one however I have tried 2 other network cards and received similar problems. I use the latest drivers for my network card so i am unsure of what the problem is. I was wondering if any other ntl users that play WoW using ntl's network card-->set-top-box has this problem and if there is any solutions available? The set-top-box I use is a Samsung box.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions the CF community is able to give

Does the STB freeze, as in you can't change channels?

Re: World of Warcraft + ntl

check the system tab in event viewer, if it shows warnings with TCP/IP then you need to apply a patch to increase the number of connections allowed.

That could be a good suggestion ^

Is your STB black by any chance?

Re: World of Warcraft + ntl

Hi

Assuming your STB isn't locking up...

This sounds like a problem my brother had with Warcraft when I changed router (went from a linksys BEFSX41to a linksys WRT54GS), except in that case the other machines could still use the internet, just the machine running the WOW client had problems.

I can't remember if the PC playing WOW lost all internet connectivity requiring a reboot or ipconfig /release (then /renew) or if it was just the client i'm afraid (but i'm thinking it was all internet connectivity on the machine).
It turned out to be something to do with a patch WOW implimented causing problems for certain hardware/driver combo's, one of which was the broadcom chip (I think) used in the WRT54GS with the driver used in most versions of it's firmware (prior to the patch people hadn't had problems with the router and WOW).

If you've tried two NIC's are they using different base chips? (a lot tend to use the same ones, usually realtek or similar).
If they aren't, then swapping the NIC out won't make much difference if it's a driver issue as they will still be using the same drivers.

I've also encountered a similar problem with Ultima Online and Marvel 10/100/1000 NIC's in the past, with almost the same sort of symptons, after an indeterminate length of time (anything from 5 seconds to 10 minutes), the client would act as if it had stopped communicating with the servers, but wouldn't go "connection lost".
In that case it took a couple of months for a new driver to be released for the chip that solved the problem - the odd thing was that it only seemed to affect people when they played on their nearest servers (I for example couldn't play on the EU servers, but could on the U.S. ones, whilst U.S. players had the opposite problem).

Sorry if that's not any help, but hopefully it might give some clues.

Hi,

Do Not know if it will help, but have you got all the required ports open for WOW. ie 3724, 6112 & 6881-6999.

Re: World of Warcraft + ntl

Hi there,

I'm quoting this from the wow europe forums Here

Quote:
Network Card Configuration

If you continue to have these problems then you will need to adjust the configuration of your network connection:
(please check with your Network Administrator before making any changes)

To access your Network configuration settings:

Go to Start and choose Control Panel

If in Category view, please click on Network and Internet Connections

Open Network Connections

Right click on your network adapter used to connect to the internet and go to Properties

Click on Configure and go to the Advanced tab

Different network cards have different options on this screen:

Disable any option labeled Checksum Offload (RX and TX) or Hardware Checksumming
Set the option called Connection Type, Speed and Duplex Settings or Media Type to Force 100 Full Duplex
(the exact wording of this option may vary)
Note: You may need to select Force 10 Full Duplex for an older network.

Set the Optimize for option to Throughput

Click OK

Note: This may cause your Connection to disconnect temporarily: Restarting the computer will usually resolve this.
If you are still disconnected, readjust the Connection Type settings.
This worked for my network stability issues and wow....

Maybe also try all the other things in the thread too...

3724 is the only port required to play the game, 6112,6881-6999 are required to update the game only. And since the user has said that he can get on the game but gets disconnected then this won't be the problem.

It seems that way from the event log, I have downloaded an optimizer which allows me to increase the amount of connections allowed.

I used to have that trouble all the time with my old PACE box, but since getting the SAMSUNG box there's been almost no set-top box freezes or modem resets.

The network card I am using at the moment is Marvel onboard one on an nforce motherboard. The other network cards I've tried is an onboard realtek one and a netgear one which used a PCI slot.

Thanks, I already have all those ports open
