Unhappy Sudden drop in blueyonder speed!?

Hi there,

I'm on TW's broadband 'complete' package (i think it's the medium speed package) and have been quite happy with my downstream speeds of 1700Kbps on a bad day up to about 2500 on a good one.

Last night (tues 17th) there was a sudden drop in my speed, and it has remained consistently low since then. Now my speed (going by the same speed test which gave the prev figures) is averaging 350Kbps, but sometimes rising to 500kbps if i'm really lucky. Also, the orange 'activity' light on my sb5100 modem is blinking slightly intermittently, instead of blinking steadily as before.

In the modem's log for the time when it dropped last night (around half nine or so):

and if it matters:
Downstream:
Frequency 331000000 Hz Locked
Signal to Noise Ratio 38 dB
Power Level -2 dB

Upstream:
Channel ID 3
Frequency 29008000 Hz Ranged
Power Level 41 dBmV

Does anyone know if this means anything, or know what my problem is? I'm currently girding my loins for the inevitable call to customer services which will probably go nowhere, and would like to have some idea of what's what when i call them so they can't just fob me off.
I've unplugged, re-plugged, reset, checked connections etc...
Really hope someone can help

Thanks

Re: Sudden drop in blueyonder speed!?

they will no doubt get your to check for spyware and viruses and say that is the problem its becoming very common, im not to techy myself, but the values seem about right but someone with more experiance here might be able to tell you, its possiable your upstream has changed onto a congestted upstream channel and that why other than that i cnt sya much more myself

Re: Sudden drop in blueyonder speed!?

if your modem config file is still 4096-384 then your on the 4meg service not 10meg so dont expect ftp of more than 500kbps download or 50kbps upload

EDIT looks like a SW file failed and it down loaded the 4meg speed FILE just a gess compairing with my 4meg congfig

Re: Sudden drop in blueyonder speed!?

I was upgraded to 10 meg last week, great i thought 1100k download speeds during the day on week days, but in the evening and weekends struggling to get 200k a lot of the time, i have just downloaded the blueyonder instant support tool and it took ages, about 30kb ps. Anybody any ideas or is it just teething troubles?

Re: Sudden drop in blueyonder speed!?

Going on other threads its not teethy problems it simply the network can not handle loads of people downlaoding 24/7, and the upstream channels are beyond there capacity

Re: Sudden drop in blueyonder speed!?

The joys of offering a totally uncapped service to be honest. Great for heavy downloaders, but a complete kick in the nuts for those who just want responsiveness and the odd quick download here and there.

Re: Sudden drop in blueyonder speed!?

Honestley, who is ordering 10mb broadband for the odd download here and there? All internet companys try to sit on the fence with this one, they entice you with "UKs fastest broadband, download 1,000,000 mp3's in 10 mins" and then in a smokings not good for you type voice say, oh but don't be doing anything illegal... really meaning yes do loads of things illegal, tell you friends and get them doing it but don't get caught....??!

Dunno I'm doing less than 10GB a month on the 8Mbit I've got now.

Bit of a guilty conscience dude, who mentioned legalities of anything? ISPs generally don't care what you're doing more how much of it you're doing.

Doesn't take many people downloading a few hundred GB a month or uploading 70GB/month before you get problems.

I was just saying that BY can be a crap ISP for people like myself because they allow people to take the **** even if it's killing their network, meaning my 10GB/month takes longer than it should, that's all

Anything i said was just a reference to the strategy of some isp's, namely by and how they attract customers.

Same as everything else. They're hardly likely to say 'average speed broadband with average usage allowance and average price' are they?

Welcome to the world of sales

Does it not depend on who your uploading to? My dl speeds are not always constant, its just the way it is. I know on p2ps, dl speeds can be **** poor, a lot of the time on p2ps my uploads are faster than my downloads.

yes it does depend on who your uploading to, say your uploading to someone on dial up, they can only download from you at there max DL speed 56k, even tho your capible of sending that data say 256k, but the people im uploading to, i know for a 100% fact they can download my maximum upload speed plus 100x more, so its definetly network, quite simply the bottom line is Blueyonder are f***ing S**T not only have they extremly poor upload speeds, there service is so unreliable.

and p2p is crap anyway,so many people are happy to download as much as they can but very few willing to upload, as it canes there bandwith. use torrents instead.. youll get much faster downloads.

Definetly, torrents are miles better than p2ps, p2ps are better for finding rares though and theres more choice. I have rarley had connection problems since I joined BY, cabel is miles better than DSL, when I was with AOL silver, I kept getting cut off, im staying away from phone lines. I'm not sure if BY do DSL.

Re: Sudden drop in blueyonder speed!?

no BY is cable only, There ok i suppose, but the upstream speeds are a alot slower than dsl, they seem to give full concentration on downstream speeds and not worry about upstream, look at bulldog DSL 8mb Down 400k up, BY 10mb Down 300k Up.. i think it has something to do with the copper in phonelines why DSL uploads are faster

and i also find (so far) BY to be not very reliable at all, in the few weeks ive been on with them, i have had 3 times where i cant connect, cable light just blinking, and a phone call to them just gets me "there is an outage in the area, and you will be back on asap" which the 3rd time (yesterday in fact) took me untill 7am this morning to connect again alltho, from what i read on forums, cable is alot more relible than DSL, all i say to that is, i feel so so sorry for people on DSL
