Cool Sharing Internet Between 2 People!

Hi! I'm new here. My mum doesn't really let me use the internet that much but, I've convinced her how. She doesn't need to buy anything new for it. But, I have my main computer connected by Ethernet! I then use my USB cable that runs into one of those USB adaptors with 4 extra USB thingys then that runs into my computer so we share the internet with 2 people. I just figured that out after ages of begging for the internet from her. But, I think we're getting my computer moved in my room so, more problems. Need to buy a longer USB cable. Anyone know to buy big long ones please?

Re: Sharing Internet Between 2 People!

You can't, really.

What you're best off doing is replacing the PC with a wireless router. Connect the router directly to the cable modem then any PCs near enough you can use ethernet cables to connect to the router.

PCs further away you can connect by adding a wireless card (internal - PCI - or external - USB) to the PC concerned which will then pick up the internet connection from the wireless router.

USB isn't really designed for networking so performance will be better too.

I forgot...

Pops off to scrape the barrel...

Wired router £17.62

Now you have the rest to buy a looooong Ethernet cable.

Re: Sharing Internet Between 2 People!

Will this router work with NTL? Also, Do I not need to buy a USB connector for the back of the computer to receive the internet?

---------- Post added at 00:09 ---------- Previous post was at 00:02 ----------

Oops! Ok, I've miss the point in my last post. Sorry. So, I buy this router. Connect the USB with the Router. Get a really really long Ethernet cable? Then, I'm away and running. But, 1 Big problem. I don't have ethernet card or anything to do with ethernet on my computer. The other one has though.

Re: Sharing Internet Between 2 People!

Does your computer not have an ether net card?
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=63323
£5.29 including vat for a card - damn easy to shove into a spare slot on your PC.

Re: Sharing Internet Between 2 People!

I don't think it does because in the back of my computer it only has:

2 USB's
Printer Connector
Joystick Connector
Dial-Up Connection

and some other stuff. I think I know what etheret is but, I don't have it. I don't want to buy an ehternet card and install it myself. I'll probably reck the computer!

Would this work?

Re: Sharing Internet Between 2 People!

No you won't. Open it up, shove it in one of the white slots, turn it on and it recognises it... shotta. 5 minute job.

---------- Post added at 00:18 ---------- Previous post was at 00:17 ----------

That would work, but would be ****. Get an ethernet card and install it. You need to learn. (how old?)

Re: Sharing Internet Between 2 People!

So, you want me to open up a computer? Errm, that would be hard. If I asked my dad, he would be nervous incase breaking anything you know! I might buy that USB to Ethernet adaptor? Works the same way!

---------- Post added at 00:20 ---------- Previous post was at 00:18 ----------

So, do I need to buy a long USB or ethernet cable?

then maybe this will help--> >here<

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Bought it to avoid installing a network card when servicing PC's - just the job.

Just do it. If you don't force anything you won't break anything. Networking over USB slows the PC down and decreases performance over the network connection too.

As I said. Piece of cake. Don't underestimate yourself

Re: Sharing Internet Between 2 People!

Ok, I'm going to ask my mum tomorrow if I can get some money to buy these things. I've already got £20 and then in Feburary another £20! Which is £40! Good enough? Ok heres what I'm getting:

Ebuyer Extra Value RJ45 Cat5e cable snagless 10m in grey
Ebuyer Extra Value 4 Port Cable/DSL Broadband Router with Print server
Belkin USB to Ethernet Adapter with 2m Patch Cable

£42.07 Including deliever (Which will arrive on Tuesday!)

Is that all I need to buy?

---------- Post added at 00:27 ---------- Previous post was at 00:26 ----------

Ok, But, I need a swear port thingy to fit the ethernet port in? Or, Can I take out the dial-up thing?
