Unhappy Please help wireless connection through cable box not working.

Hello all

Hope somebody can help :-) Ok I am posting this on behalf of my friend who can't access the internet. 2weeks ago she had her telewest cable box replaced with their new one - 'Exlporer 4200DVB'. Prior to the replacement her internet was working but after the tech guy changed over the boxes her internet would not work. He left telling her that it would take up to 24 hours for her internet connection to start working again which was just fobbing her off I have now learnt. Therefore I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software etc for her Netgear ME102 wireless receiver etc. about 10 times now. The signal is 100% but, still no internet connection coming through! Telewest tech support say that everything is fine their end they say their is a signal going through to her box. And the netgear wireless receiver etc is working fine her end.

After 3 different hour long calls to Telewest support I was told " Sorry there is absolutely nothing else we can suggest we have exhausted all avenues and if you manage to sort it please let us know so we can add it to our database" LOL. Forgot to mention when i go into ipconfig the IP address keeps showing as 169.......... rather than starting with 80 or 82.

The pc is running on Windows XP HOMe and their is no firewall software left on there. I have tried everything I can think of does anyone have any suggestions cause Telewest tech support sure don't!!!

Thanks very much

Let's get back to basics on this first. We need to establish that it is the Telewest Connection that is messed up, and not the addition of the wireless router.

Can an internet connection be made if a PC is connected directly, using ethernet, between the Explorer and the PC. In other words, what happens when the wireless networking bit / router, etc is removed?

Re: Please help wireless connection through cable box not working.

Hello Rob and thanks for the smiley welcome.

Good question... I will have to go there 2morrow with my ethernet cable and try. Can you suggest anything else I can try whilst I am there? It just seems strange that the internet has mucked up since the installment of the new cable box. Also forgot to mention that the tech guy had plugged in a 'X-over adaptor' into the back box but Telewest tech support line were not 100% sure that it needed one for their new Explorer box.

Re: Please help wireless connection through cable box not working.

The basics are simply to power off everything whenever you change over the wiring or the device connected to the modem/STB. You can only have one device connected to the TW modem/STB, i.e. a single PC, or alternatively a router (whcih the TW device thinks is a computer).

Get a basic connection established first (or not as the case may prove to be) then, and only then add in issues with networking. At the moment it seems very much that you just do not have a clue as to what thing or things may be causing issues.

The crossover lead may well be an issue if the old lead is still in place. The adage, "such it and see" springs to mind.

When you do get as far as putting the wireless back in, having proved the Explorer is working OK and you do have a connection, consider doing a manufacturer reset on the router first, so again you start from a clean sheet.

Re: Please help wireless connection through cable box not working.

The Scientific Atlanta boxes do not require a Cross-Over Adapter only the pace 1000 series that TW supply requires this.

So remove the X-over Adapter, if trying direct ethernet connection reboot stb in order to get an ip, same goes with accesspoint.
