Win XP 64 and NTL via STB
Hi,
I have just built a new system with trial edition XP 64, and want to connect it to my existing NTL broadband connection to update all the drivers. It is all connected correctly. However the NTL CD does not run on XP 64, as it is a 32 bit programme and keeps crashing! The network connections shows that DHPC is failing to establish an IP and cannot connect to internet.
I have tried copying the settings from my main normal XP machine with no luck: It shows the LAN as being connected, but still am not able to access internet!?!?
I am stuck, can anybody suggest the best way to proceed!!
Cheers, Andrew

 Andrew.
If you are not using a router, each NIC has to be registered with the STB. Have a look at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d...r.html#pacereg for a how to. Assuming you are using a NIC you don't need the CD.
Don't forget, you will need to powercycle the STB between plugging in each system.

Cheers for replies. Firstly, I am using ethernet to connect. Secondly, i am not using a router, and hopefully not being too thick, what does NIC stand for?!?!

Network Interface Card, in this case its what your ethernet port sits on if its not built onto the motherboard.

NIC = Network interface card, ie Ethernet interface.
So, you will need to follow the guide on Robin's site

Re: Win XP 64 and NTL via STB
OK, this is gonna be a long one.......
I followed the steps listed, shut my machine down, reset my STB and then the STB displayed three green lights and 88:88!
I rang customer services who said that the box would need replacing and they would send an engineer. He came, and ended up trying 3 different boxes, none of which worked properly. They were all dropping out channels. However, the third box had its interactive light illuminated, and i managed to get the internet on the PC i had built (XP 64 machine). However, now when i plug the ethernet cable back into my old PC (XP 32) that had worked previously, register the MAC address and reboot, it will not recognise the PC. It lists two PC names I have set up on the start.ntl screen, but keeps recognising this PC as a new PC.
The engineer said that he thought the problem was the Pace box (which are all refurbs). He said he had been having problems with all the stock he had in his van. He said that we should hold out for a new samsung box. So two more engineers have called, and i am holding out for the new box.
So,
1)Do you think the box is the problem?
2)Should I hold out for a new Samsung box?
3)Is the modem in the Samsung box better, particularly if i upgrade my BB?
Hope people understand this! Many questions........ Cheers, Andrew

Re: Win XP 64 and NTL via STB
with regard to getting taken back to the provisioning screen- in Internet Explorer, go to tools-> internet options-> content (i think) and change the cookie settings to allow first party cookies. Then clear all the temporary internet files and cookies and try browsing again.
1) not with the 64bit/32bit issue no, but with the channels possibly
2) You might be holding for a long time...
3) I believe the cable modem in the samsung and pace boxes is the same, except in the Samsung there are two processors, compared to the 1 in the pace boxes. If you upgrade to anything higher than 1meg you will need either a Samsung box or a Stand Alone Cable Modem for your connection anyway.

I don't think you've said what speed you're on, andrew, but a Pace box is only good for 1Mb - faster than that, and you need a Samsung box.
There is an alternative though - I waited for ages for a Samsung box (there appears to be a shortage, especially in some areas) to get the 2Mb service, and they didn't appear to be forthcoming. So a helpful CS person suggested I have a cable modem instead, and I went for that. Now I have a cable modem for broadband and the Pace box for TV, and it works fine - in fact, as I understand it, the modem will stand me in better stead than a Samsung box would have when the 10Mb speeds come in.
Worth thinking about.

Re: Win XP 64 and NTL via STB
There is a limit to the number of PCs you can have registered for your NTL STB connection. Not sure if it is three or five, but if the former you don't have much leeway.
Kill off any of the registrations for the Ps that don't work. The replacement STBs will have been enough to corrupt those anyway.
Once the old names are removed, switch off (no power) the STB, connect up the PC you need to register via ehternet, disconnecting any others you have), reboot all, and that should then enbale you to register.
If you have more than one PC regularly used, I'd get a router. Lot less hassle.
