incoming mail problem

As a new user, I hope I'm following the guidelines
1) Since last Tue, incoming mail is not reaching me. Specifically, the incoming server won't keep to pop.ntlworld.com and keeps reverting to 127.0.0.1.
2) I have cable TV - no problems
3) I have followed the ntl tutorial to check the servers etc (which amends to pop.ntlworld.com). OE then demanded my username and password, which it then rejected. I spoke to Customer Support, who had me remove the mail server access, and reinstall. This worked until I logged off the PC. When I next logged on, pop.ntlworld.com had reverted to 127.0.0.1
4)I live in UK. Windows XP3. Using cable modem. PC is not part of a network. Have McAfee Security Center, latest version, installed.

Any suggestions?
Paul

Re: incoming mail problem

127.0.0.1 is your local machine.

Sounds like something to do with your McAffee setup to me (or maybe a virus, but I wouldn't have thought so).

No experience with McAfee products I'm afraid, so I'll just say and that I'm sure someone will be along soon who can help

Oh, and you might find that your question gets moved to another part of the Forum, don't worry about that though

Re: incoming mail problem

Remembering Outlook / Outlook Express Password

On systems, Outlook or Outlook Express will not remember the e-mail password,
which would then need to be entered in each time.

To solve the problem:
  1. Open Registry Editor
  2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft
  3. Right Click Protected Storage System Provider
  4. Choose the Permissions option
  5. Click the Advanced box near the bottom right hand corner. This should open another box, Towards the bottom of this box there should be two tick boxes, make sure that both of them are ticked. Click Apply, another box will open Click Yes, then Click OK and OK again.
  6. Left Click the + next to Protected Storage System Provider and Delete any sub folder in this tree. (Right clicking and choose the delete option or press the delete key and choosing yes to delete)
  7. Shutdown and Restart Computer.
Hope this helps.

Re: incoming mail problem

Thanks for the suggestions. Raistlin was on the money when he mentioned my McAfee firewall, as that was where the problem lay. I don't know why it happened, but the McAfee online support was very helpful. Sent me instructions how to link into OE, and (touch wood) it appears to be working
