				Stuttering, faltering, stopping

Can’t think of any other words to describe what some Tivo recordings are doing.
Only recordings, and not on all channels.

 Tried a restart, didn’t help.

Is it an engineer job, or is there something else I can try.

 Ta.

 | You could try a re-boot (at the plug) and see whether that makes a difference. If it doesn't, you will need to call Customer Services.

You could do worse than exchanging your Tivo for a V6 box, if that's an option!

If it's doing it on all or most recordings then the hard drive could be on the way out.

			I’ll try the plug-out first.
No, not on all channels, only one or two - what I haven’t done is try and pin it down to which of the three Tivo channels it happens on.

I take it that if I have to have a new hard drive, I’ll lose all my good recordings?

If it's knackered you get a new Tivo or V6, yes I think you will lose them.

 | Happened to my box about 5 years ago. Sounds like your box is on the way out. Virgin should swap it free of charge if you give them a call. They will probably run you through a few solutions whilst you are on the phone to see if it's fixable first.

I do have it linked to a DVD recorder so I’d better start copying!

Soon after I joined virgin, I had a similar experience - certain channels were worse than others, then I started loosing certain channels altogether.
I got an engineer out, who tested my signal strength? Said it was not high enough for 200mb broadband and 2 v6 boxes.

He went to the box down the road and moved me up the 'connection ladder' - this resolved my problems.

Not really sure why all connections are not equal but apparently they are not - this might be your problem?

Fair comments. My 2 Tivos have both worked well for some years, so I’m more inclined to the hard drives clapping out theory.

A daft question, I'm sure, but...
Is there any way of saving all the recordings I've got on my Tivo box without copying them one-by-one to my linked DVD recorder?

Question applies whether I go for a simple upgrade, or whether I NEED such an upgrade because my hard drive is partially failing.

Most of our recordings, which date back months (you know the way, you record it just in case you want to see it 'one day') are fine - the juddering problem seems to have only arisen in the past month or so.

If your TiVo does get replaced, you can also copy the series links via the My Virgin Media website, so things will get recorded again next time they are broadcast.

Thanks spiderplant, that IS handy - means I can set it up and go away!
I'll also check out the virginmedia link, also looks interesting.

 | See if you can get a V6 to replace your Tivo. It's worth a try!

OLDBOY'S suggestion of a plug re-boot worked. I just pulled the power line out of the back of the Tivo box, left it for a few seconds, replugged. Restarted, and not a glimmer since. 'Ordinary' restarts (using the menu) didn't change anything, so many thanks, OLDBOY, you've solved it...
