Question new home existing cables

I live in Bradford and have recently moved into my first home and have a free view built in tv, i've tried connecting this to the existing cables but had no luck getting a signal.
Their was a brown cable with no end on so I fitted a new one but nothing through that and then their is a white cable coming from a telewest broadband box on the skirting board. When I connected that nothing happened but the connector got hot.
Do I need a new satalite and cable fitting or is there something I can do with these cables existing... Thank you in advance.

Re: new home existing cables

Please do not post the same enquiry twice. It's rude and unnecessary.
