Eating issues

Ok I'm a 32 year old aspergers male and I tend to obsess but I worry a form of eating disorder is manifesting in me. Like I worry about weight not fat but sometimes look at my stomach and think what if I am. Then I'll cut down on food, after I eat dinner I feel guilty thinking it will clog my heart and put weight on and make me ill other time I feel fat then once I had dinner my mum had a few extra wedges with cheese offered me I said no incase it put weight on me. Is this normal, is this the autism or sign of a eating disorder as all are not physical

re: Eating issues

you need to ask a healthcare professional. It sound like anxiety and paranoia is that part of what you suffer normally?

Yeah I suffer from high anxiety and paranoia but I'm trying to make sense is it part of that, or a eating issue like I feel guilty when I eat, wondering what it doing to my weight

re: Eating issues

well the simple solution is to perhaps try a food diary?

If you want to put your mind at rest open an account here http://www.fitday.com/ fill in all the details and keep a diary of your activities and what you eat and it will tell you if you have to much to little or if its balanced

Andrew: you are asking for a diagnosis of a psychological disorder over the internet. It's not going to happen, at least not reliably. No-one on here is going to be able to tell you if you just have Asperger's or Asperger's plus an eating issue. You need to talk to a professional.

re: Eating issues

Give you GP a call, that is the best bet and have a chat with them. They are the people who are in the best place to advise you.

re: Eating issues

Go back to your doctor..I think you may need extra help than you have been receiving up until now.

re: Eating issues

If though you want a simple guide that may put your mind at rest then just look at your BMI (body mass index) Just put in your current height and weight and if you're in the green then you have no issue with weight for your height.

Please though do not use this as an alternative to talking to your doctor about this issue

re: Eating issues

Our 20-year-old son has Aspergers and has started to fret over food and drink recently.

We have always enjoyed a varied and healthy diet, mostly home cooked, but external influences, especially TV and the internet, have been putting odd ideas in his head.

In his situation, a "new idea" can become a rule that he will not want to break, so we have to be on hand to defuse any "new idea" that goes against common sense or fact before it takes a deep hold on him.

We missed his sudden panic over Aspartame, so now he avoids anything with it in.

We have asked for professional help with this situation, but now that he's on the "Adult Service" of the NHS, help is very rare compared to when he was a child/teenager. So we have a hit a wall.

We have appraoached an Autism charity, but they have yet to respond after several months, despite repeat requests. Like many charities, I fear they are more organised to get donations, than to do anything to help.

Our GP just shrugged, as he knows that help for adult sufferers is meagre, but maybe yours can get things moving to get you help and advice?

re: Eating issues

WHy not weigh yourself regularly & check it is normal for you height & build, BMI index etc. However as others have said would also recommend discussing with Doctor / Heathcare professional

My son, also an Aspergers sufferer, goes through dietary fads on a regular basis. I think he picks up on things in the media or internet.

Among the recent ones are: drinking plain, boiled water; not eating egg yolks; not eating bread; starting to drink wine; fussing over every minor ingredient; drinking herbal teas; rejecting all meat, then craving meat; ditto cheese; ditto crisps; chilli in all forms.........

His weight has slipped down a little to more "normal" but he seems healthy.

8lb is a lot - I find it hard to believe that you could lose more than 3lb a day even if you were eating nothing
