ITV1+1 For Legal Reasons This Program cannot be shown

Does anybody know why or not notice Star Wars was not shown on ITV1 +1 on saturday, "for legal resons this program cannot be broadcast" so the channel was blank until the film ended.

Re: ITV1+1 For Legal Reasons This Program cannot be shown

I think it's got something to do with how ITV purchased the right to show the movie. They maybe only purchased the right to show it once and the +1 channels would count as another showing.

Maybe somebody else can confirm or otherwise?

Re: ITV1+1 For Legal Reasons This Program cannot be shown

Noticed on the EPG that (sky) was written after the program name, maybe only sky subscribers were able to view it.

Re: ITV1+1 For Legal Reasons This Program cannot be shown

Probably the contracts for those programs have channel restrictions on them.. ITV1+1 is a seperate channel to ITV1 so until the contracts to show the shows are redone they can't legally show them

Re: ITV1+1 For Legal Reasons This Program cannot be shown

IIRC broadcasters buy rights to films for a set period, covering number of showings and also the way they're shown. ITV most likely has an existing contract for showing Star Wars that doesn't include re-broadcast on a +1 service, as they most likely didn't think they'd need that when they signed it.

It's not at all unusual for programming not directly made by, or commissioned by, a broadcaster to be withheld from its online catch-up service, but if that happened with Coronation Street recently I'd suspect it was an error.

Re: ITV1+1 For Legal Reasons This Program cannot be shown

So had I wanted to watch star wars on the +1 channel my viewing would have been totally ruined, how many other +1 channels does this happen to , I also dont understand how the +1 is a seperate company when it supposedly screens an identical channel one hour later. Is this happening because its new.

Give it time.. Contracts are not done days or weeks in advance but months and years.. Ch4 and E4 had exactly the same issue when they first started, now everything on C4/E4 is repeated on the +1 channels

This always happens when new services are set up. Contracts simply take time to catch up. ITV1+1 is not a separate company but it is a separate channel within the definitions of contracts like these.

For example, you never used to be able to watch the English FA Cup Final live on BBC1 Scotland because the existing broadcast rights didn't extend to Scotland at the time the full regionalised digital service was launched. AFAIK they have now resolved that.

Re: ITV1+1 For Legal Reasons This Program cannot be shown

You just assume everything works, slightly offtopic on BBCHD you sometimes get "this program cannot be broadcast in your area", which seems to come at the end of a program and before the start of the next. It then shows the BBCHD screen with programs will continue shortly, whats that all about. It seems to just cut out adverts of programs coming up later in the day or week.

That only happens on BBC One HD, not BBC HD, and only when local news is on as BBC One HD isn't regional unlike it's SD counterpart.

Much the same as when BBC1 first appeared on digital satellite - there were no regional variations back then. IIRC it is still not possible to regionalise BBC2 to the same extent as they used to on analogue.
