Modem mode problem?

After the R36 firmware update failed to resolve the poor wifi range of my Superhub, I decided to set up a cheapo router which I had sitting around unused in the box (Belkin F5D8236uk4) to see if that would improve matters.

The Belkin certainly provides an improvement in wireless reception and performance to some degree in comparison to the Superhub (though hardly earth-shattering), but I've been encountering problems streaming Lovefilm Instant via my PS3.

The Superhub is currently set up with wireless radio switched off but still in router mode with the Belkin providing wireless connectivity. I wondered if some of the problems with video streaming were down to glitches caused by both the SH and the Belkin acting as routers so have resolved to try out modem mode on the SH.

As far as I can tell, all I should need to do is set the Superhub in modem mode and the internet connection should continue to work as normal? When in modem mode and corrected to my laptop by ethernet, I can confirm that this is the case. However, when I try to connect the Superhub to the router, I'm not getting any internet connectivity at all via wireless.

I'm also not able to access the Superhub (on 192.168.100.1) to switch off modem mode so a pinhole reset is the only way I can get back to having it set in router mode.

I've tried various reboots of both devices, various different ethernet ports on each but without any success.

Am I doing something wrong, or is a problem with the Superhub or Belkin router causing the problem?

Re: Modem mode problem?

First question. Is the laptop connected to the router by ethernet when using the shub in modem mode?

Is the router setup to assign an IP address to the laptop?

If you connect the laptop to the shub (modem mode) can you access the internet. If you can you should also be able to connect the shub using 192.168.100.1 (can you?)

Cant think of any other questions at the moment but make sure you reboot the shub every time you change your configuration.

Re: Modem mode problem?

i can comment only using modem mode

if you set the SH in modem mode then you need to connect the cable at lan 4 at SH (the one next of the white coax cable)

then will be able to access 192.168.100.1 and 192...0.1
If you have it at lan 1 of SH will not give access to router either to pcwhen is with modem mode

My modem and router is upstairs but I generally use the laptop downstairs and connect to the internet via wifi (along with a rarely-used media PC and PS3). No usual wired connections to the router or the Superhub (other than the cable between the SH and the router when both are set to router mode).

Thanks to babis3g's tip, I can now access the modem directly once again via lan 4 so can more easily disable modem mode when my testing fails!

I've attempted to connect to the Belkin router with the SH in modem mode through both lan 1 and lan 4 and, although the icon lights up indicating there is a wired connection, there is still no internet connection via the router. The modem light on the router flashes yellow (instead of the blue of a settled connection) when I am plugged into lan 4 of the SH but shows nothing when plugged into lan 1. The internet light of the Belkin router stays resolutely off on both occasions.

I cannot access the SH using 192.168.100.1 through the Belkin router, however the laptop is connected. I can access the Belkin router via wireless.

I don't need to change the IP address of the Belkin's LAN, do I?

It's years since I needed to fiddle around with my old Linksys router so I'm afraid I can't remember much of anything I had to learn back then!

Re: Modem mode problem?

i can not help with belkin but here some basic

turn modem mode at SH
Take a cable cat5 or cat 5e and insert to lan 4 at SH(leave it at this port even if you turn router mode, back later)
other end connect it at wan port of the beklin
Take an other cat cable from lan 1 of the beklin to pc

turn SH & beklin & pc on after all cables are with this order

now open a window browser at and access the SH 192.168.100.1
Should see the SH status

open an other window in browser and type 192.168.2.1 (i think that is the one for beklin routers)...if is not the one then try the one that is by default
If you have change it in the past you may need to do factory reset

when you access beklin status (that where i don't know about beklin) you need set up (in mine i have it set it under static or dynamic ip) the correct settings

here is the manual for more help if you have lost it
http://www.belkin.com/uk/support/art...d=14380&scid=0
and also if you look around that beklin support link may have newest firmware for your router

If you can not access while is wired the 192....... of beklin or SH may need release / renew ip address at windows????

also more help here to set it as static ip or dynamic ( i have it as obtain ip automatic on mine)
http://www.belkin.com/support/articl...=1488&scid=221

So which stage are you facing the problem?

Re: Modem mode problem?

I've followed your recommended process of switching off all the devices, connecting them as suggested, then restarting in order.

The result is that I am not able to access the SH on 192.168.100.1 - it just times out when I attempt to connect. I tried releasing/renewing the connection using ipconfig when connected up in this manner but without any apparent difference in response.

The modem light on the Belkin router flashes yellow when the SH is connected in modem mode which indicates that it knows the connection is there, but it is not connecting properly.

If I connect the SH directly to my laptop when in modem mode, it connects properly and I can access the internet.

The Belkin is set to have a dynamic IP, incidentally, which is correct for Virginmedia, as far as I am aware. I've also tried to enter the Virgin DNS settings on the Belkin as an alternative to the default which is to accept DNS from the ISP automatically, but this hasn't made any difference.

It's looking as though the problem may be the Belkin which was on default settings as it had not been used before it was connected to the SH. I've got an old Linksys router in the garage which I can probably try out if nobody has any other ideas. The problem is that I'm heading off on holiday tomorrow morning so won't be able to try that until I get back!

Re: Modem mode problem?

Hi
I've just received my Super Hub Model 480.
I want to use it in modem mode and thought I would set this up prior to installation.
I connected my laptop directly via ethernet and can log on no problem.
My issue is that I cannot see the modem mode settings at all.The SuperHub Settings Tab just brings up Remote connection option and it is not in Advanced settings either.
Do I actually need to have it connected to the Virgin Cable network before I see the option ?
Thanks
Iain

Re: Modem mode problem?

yes you do, as its shipped with an older firmware and it needs to be connected to the VM network, to download the latest firmware, which now includes modem mode

Re: Modem mode problem?

Thanks for the info. It seems a pain having to go through the whole rigmarole of setting it up in a mode that isn't actually wanted!
I take it that it has to be completely set up and activated before update F/W is available.

Thanks again

Iain

Re: Modem mode problem?

latest firmware is out for every one and don't think it need specific set up and mode it does not matter
when you connect it a t VM network switch it off for 5 min then back on
It should download the firmware and reboot it self
if not try turn it off and on tomorrow again
or call them to push the firmware for you the same day if they can
