Fibre optic broadband - have i been conned??

Following on from previous post, I have just had old Virgin XL package (from about 3+ years ago) with old SD box and old broadband changed to new essentials package (which i beleive is 30m fibre optic?)

Anyway i performed a speed test yesterday on here and it only came in at about 10mb. I have just tested it now on this forum - average speed 5.2!

What really makes me think ive been conned is i was outside sorting out all the old cables that have been added and added to the house over the years! And the fibrecity grey box on the outside of house which i would have thought they would have run to? It only has 1 black cable into it (the feed from underground) and nothin out of it into the old brown box where the old virgin line is. The new superhub is connected up to the same coaxial cable as the TV which is connected outside to the OLD brown cable out of ground. Surely the superhub should be connected to the new grey fibrecity box??

Thanks;

Harvey

Re: Fibre optic broadband - have i been conned??

For your speed issues, your power levels could be out of whack, if you post your cable modem config, we should be able to tell. If that's the case you'd expect an engineer visit after getting in contact with VM.

VM's TV and Internet both come down the same Coaxial cable from the green cabinet. VM's fibre usually goes to the cabinet, but in some cases it doesn't, it goes to an optical node which may be further away. Regardless, if you're getting crap speeds, then it doesn't matter what "box" it's connected to, it will usually be a power issue or a local issue.

Ok, thanks boroboi. How would i go about finding the modem's config settings o show you?

Just out of curiousity what is the grey box outside then? Or is fibrecity actually BT!? I am not sure who installed it, the mother in law signed for it when they asked permission to install it. I just always assumed it was Virgin!

FibreCity im guessing are a FTTC VDSL service, did she have fibre broadband previously?

192.168.0.1 in your browser, login is admin - password is changeme

go to advanced options to the bottom of the main three selections.

Down the left, go to connection, it should show you power levels and your operating config, you can just copy paste the whole page to make it easier.

Did a search for fibrecity, it seems it was a failed scheme to roll out fibre to the home to allow min 100mb up to 1gbit internet. It then had some fraud investigation, then bought out but still seems unclear whats happening with it!

Virgin Media don't do fibre-optic service to consumers

Virgin Media has nothing to do with FibreCity.

Re: Fibre optic broadband - have i been conned??

Downstream power looks fine, upstream is on the high side but still within "tolerance" and wouldn't cause the issues you're describing. Just a quick question, wired or wireless?

It's possible that it's just local congestion.

It may be worth registering at www.community.virginmedia.com and starting a thread there. A VM forum tech will then be able to check over your connection and look over your line in more detail.
