Universal Remote that works with V+
Hello.
could anyone recomend a universal remote control that will work my V+ box? (its actually the Telewest version of the V+ box, had it a couple of years now)
I've tried 2 differant ones now (£30 and £60 remotes) but neither have the functions built in and the learning function doesn't work either.
i'd be willing to spend a fair bit as i'm fed up of messing around with 7 remotes!
any help would be much appreciated, cheers.
CarlitoYeah.
P.S. also, is there an option somewhere to erase all my recordings?

Harmony 525. Works like a charm with the V+ box, and is also the best remote control you'll ever own. Bit of an awkward bugger to set up, but once it's done it's awesome!

Re: Universal Remote that works with V+
thanks for that.
i found this at the StoneAudio website:
"The remote controls for the Pace NTL/Telewest digital cable set-top box (STB) models 1000, 1010, 2000 and 4000 use an unusual infra-red signal protocol, based on the IRDA standard. This system was designed to allow for devices like keyboards for internet access, and game pads for interactive games. The use of this IRDA based system causes problems for users wanting to control the Pace STB using most types of universal remote, programmable remotes like the Philips Pronto, VCRs, DVD recorders with set-top box control, or via an infra-red remote repeater/sender system (for control from another room)."
Which explains alot. they offer a £35 convertor that sticks to the front of the box, it looks **** but if it does the job....
ShadowTD, does your harmony remote work without the convertor? do you have an old telewest+ box?
thanks again.

The V+ box uses standard protocols (as do the Samsung and later Pace V boxes). It is essentially *only* the boxes listed in that article that use IrDA. Indeed, Redremote who manufacture the boxes state that they don't work with the V+ and are not needed.

ok, whats the easiest way to confirm i do have one of the older STB's running the IRDA system, is it hidden in settings or somewhere? i'd like to make sure i have a Pace 1000, 1010, 2000 or 4000 before i buy the convertor.
cheers.

Re: Universal Remote that works with V+
If you have a Pace box from Telewest then you almost certainly have one of the above models. Look at the label underneath to see which it is.
However, if you have a Pace 4000, these will also work without the converter if you can get your hands on a RC5 remote. That's a blue ntl/VM remote, a silver-with-blue-edges VM one, or a V+ remote. Or a universal remote, of course.
A small correction to Stuart's post: the Scientific-Atlanta 4000DVB and 4200DVB also use IrDA.

Re: Universal Remote that works with V+
If you have a universal remote knocking around try code 0524.
Works with the TEVION and Maxview that I have.

That's what SA call the V+. It uses the bog-standard RC5 protocol, so any universal remote should work as long as it's got enough buttons for the PVR functions. I'd be surprised if you can find one that already knows all the codes, but the learning function should be fine.
I don't know of a page with pictures of all the boxes. I might rustle something up for the Articles section.

Re: Universal Remote that works with V+
Only thing that puts me off the Harmony remotes is the web based programming interface. I've heard mixed results, some people hating it and others finding it works fine.
And personally I've had horrendous issues with Logitech gear in the past and I'm reluctant to put myself through that torture again.
