Cable and ADSL

I have a few issues I'd like to address in planning for my installation of cable in a few weeks time.

I currently have an ADSL line which is stable but a little slow, so on that basis I have ordered 50mb Cable. However as my employer pays for the ADSL it is not going away. So first issue is I would like to try and combine cable and ADSL into the same router, I realise I can't combine the bandwidth together but having something that automatically failed over from cable>adsl if there was an outage would be nice.

Second issue is I currently have a Billion ADSL2+ router which has really good wireless coverage, even though it is sited in a cupboard in my Hall, I heard that the superhub has wireless "issues" and therefore having it also in a cupboard might cause me a coverage problem, so is there anyway I can continue to use my current router for the wireless part of my network.

Lastly I have a significant amount of kit in my house (wired and wireless) using the 192.168.1.0/24 network, I read somewhere that due to the superhub using 192.168.1.0/24 for one of it's guest networks it was impossible to renumber the main interface to this network, is this true and is there a way around it, this would be a major issue for me I have no desire to renumber 50+ devices (I run a virtual server setup at home)

Any help greatly appreciated.

Re: Cable and ADSL

If you want to use your current router for wifi and load balancing then the answer is NO

You'd need the bridge mode both your superhub and the ADSL modem/router and then buy a specialist 2 WAN port router that would balance the internet load between the two connections, this new router would also take control of the wifi and DHCP

Re: Cable and ADSL

Thanks for the reply:

So by a specialist router I assume you mean:

Somethign like a Billion BiPAC 7800N

http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop...ProductID=8074

Would this allow me to have ADSL connected to one port and then the other connected to the Superhub, turning off the superhub's wireless?

Has anybody else atcually done this with this specific router, I'm quite happy to buy one just want to be sure it's possible before I shell out the money.

Re: Cable and ADSL

Yep, something like that would do great..

You need to use the superhub as VM doesn't allow 3rd party equipment to connect directly to their cable system and currently there's no official way to turn off the built in router but there is a firmware under beta testing that will allow it and also a backdoor way.

Re: Cable and ADSL

I used to use the TP Link load balancing router then switched to that Billion 7800N. All it can really offer is a failsafe if one connection fails, you wont get the benefit of combined speed of both connections. The variations in network latency between providers prevents data packets being split effectively over 2 connections, you will just end up with timeouts and packet drops. The QOS engine on the Billion is great, you can specify gaming/Voip to one connection then web browsing or even specific PC's to the the other connection (for example).

I use this at the moment, far more powerful... http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop...ProductID=9299

It is possible, just rather pointless, time consuming and pointless for home use. If you enjoy tinkering with tech then go for it, but otherwise I would spend your cash on something else.

Re: Cable and ADSL

Presumably if I decided (at least initially) not to care about ADSL/Cable failover I could just use my current Billion router to connect to the superhub, then turn off DHCP/Wireless on the superhub, is there a Howto somewhere showing the steps needed to do this?

Thanks

Re: Cable and ADSL

The fail-over is what the OP asked for so the Billion is perfect for him..

Re: Cable and ADSL

Thanks for the input on the router issue(s)
Does anybody have any feedback for me on my use of the 192.168.1.0 network and whether I will be able to continue to use that once I have the superhub?

Thanks

Brett

Re: Cable and ADSL

Just looking at this from an entirely different angle ... can't you persuade your employer to pay for cable instead of ADSL?

Re: Cable and ADSL

We recently introduced cable to our office in addition to the ADSL. This has been set up with a Draytek Dual Wan 2930 router (non wireless version). It does the job. We actually set it running in Dual Wan rather than just failover mode so that we get best use of both connections for whatever traffic is happening. a 2 user office can shift a bit of stuff at times. You do have to be careful with routing of certain types of traffic though as some servers will be expecting only one IP connection at a time so you can't have stuff like SSL and gaming potentially dual routing.

Re: Cable and ADSL

Yes I did try to persuade them but they weren't having it I'm afraid, even though the ADSL is more expensive they have a POLICY and thats that
