Opening My Pictures in Folder view takes a long time... (Windows 7)

...but is near instantaneous when arranged by day from the library.

This is very annoying for things like ebay and photo sites where you really need to be looking at folders, not a huge array of filenames or thumbnails.

Just to make myself completely clear:

Opening the my pictures folder directly takes a long time to populate the list of pictures and folders.

Viewing the photos in my pictures from the library in folder mode takes a long time.

Viewing all the pictures at once from the "by day" option in windows 7 libraries is near instantaneous.

I've tried reindexing to no avail.

This problem occurs even if I close then immediately reopen the same folder.

Can anyone help?

Thanks a lot.

the first thing I would try is to reset the thumbnail cache...

http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/4285/...umbnail-cache/

Does your pictures folder have a lot of images in it? It might be that windows has not cached all the thumbnails yet. it will do this on view (i.e., if you open the folder, then start scrolling down the page in order that it forces windows to show you a thumbnail of the image). once it has the thumbs.db full of all your images, it will be a lot faster! indexing alone does not populate the thumbs.db file.

let us know how it goes....

alternatively, use Google Picasa 3, which imo, is excellent for viewing images (and I have around 35,000 images in my library and it has no issues with speed at all)

Thanks very much but it stills seems obsessed with repopulating the thumbs when in folder view.

I've allowed it a long time to recreate the thumbs but there still seems to be a problem.

The problem wouldn't be solved by Picassa as ebay uses Windows folders to enable you to choose pics.

Might have to put up with it until I do a reinstall but thanks very much for your help.

just leaving the folder open will not be enough - you need to have the thumbnail in view for windows to actually create the view. this means scrolling down the pictures directory until it has 'seen' each of the files so it can create the thumbnail.

Long shot here: have you by any chance got any .pdf files which have found their way into the folder? Reader (if you're unfortunate enough to have to use it) often does a fantastic job of crippling explorer when you browse a folder containing pdf files.
