Archos 101

Would have posted this in the tablet style device thread but thought the Samsung galaxy Tab and the ipad have their own lol

Recieved mine today first impressions below

Device arrived with 2.2.1 firmware
Build quality is better than I expected
Flash 10.1 installs and full youtube videos play fine ( only tested a couple)
Marketplace easy to install
Apps missing from marketplace
Default browser works ok Installed opera mini from apk as opera is missing from market. Firefox is to slow and crashes. Web browsing fairly quick hard to decide which I prefer
Device is snappy enough but lags when there is sync or downloads
Asphalt 5 HD could not see my external microsd although device accesses it fine
3d tested with raging thunder 2 =nice
Simpsons HD cap in AVI format = Nice
WMV8 files do not play with default player
Media lib update takes to long
Installed rockplayer for missing codec support
screen shows up finger prints bad
Needs a root for the device

Re: Archos 101

I can not see any reason why not. The HTC devs have now got Froyo running on the nand of the HD2 which is a windows mobile device so even if not officially it will unofficially I imagine

Re: Archos 101

Unofficially the android developers are saying that most hardware can run the newer Androids, now they are not saying it will run well but it will run lol

Possibly, although the overall hardware specs are capable it suffers from only 265mb which is below the "recommended" minimum spec of 512mb. Thats not to say that Archos wont release a lite version of gingerbread or even a full rom with some modding.

Re: Archos 101

Ok the only problem with this device as I see it is lack of ram.

If you are in landscape and running apps everything is great you can turn to portrait and the app will turn not worries but if you are on desktop there is lag while the desktop switches. This in fairness is only a small issue and only with the desktop but it does slow the device use down somewhat

Also there is lag when the device is installing something from marketplace. I put this down to lack of ram

Overall for what I want to use it for which is Facebook, Webrowsing,Video and Music (when away from home ) its perfect and it should save electric as my pc can spend more time in sleep. I estimate a saving of 400 watts per hour for say 5 hours a day on average ( used to leave pc and tv its connected to on all day) so it will save £1 a week meaning it will pay for itself in 5 years lmao

Hey! That kind of logic is (c) cookie_365

And to think of all those people frittering their money away and putting stress on an already struggling environment by not buying an expensive toy.
