Re: Windows Defender

Depends if you have anything else to do the job... You should be able though to add exceptions for programs...

Re: Windows Defender

Thing is It never blocked me from opening programmes and now it has started blocking me. I never even knew it was there till today and it told me that my settings were stopping me from opening certain files

Re: Windows Defender

When you say it is blocking programs what type of programs do you mean, or is it blocking you from opening certain file types e.g. .png/.jpeg etc, etc?

Go to Control Panel->Windows Defender->Look in History to see what has been blocked.

Re: Windows Defender

When I turn on my laptop and It's booting up the first thing it says that some programmes have been blocked and if I try go go on certain sites then it just says your settings does not allow this program to run. That is the only way I have of explaining as I'm not computer savvy. Sorry

Re: Windows Defender

Have a look in Tools->quarantined items and see if anything is listed there. You may have to click View to see them.

Are you running Vista Defirish, Defender has changed a bit in 7 compared to Vista. You need to look at the Software Explorer section to see if anything is blocked at start up (which it could be for a number of reasons like unsigned or requesting Admin privileges)

Re: Windows Defender

Windows Defender is a load of rubbish, glad they got rid of it on Windows 7. I just use Microsoft Security Essentials which has antivirus and antispyware built in.

Re: Windows Defender

If you look at this article http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/wi...ontent;leftCol and scroll to about half way down is that the pop up you`re getting "Windows has blocked some start up programs" ?

p.s. I agree with Ben B, if you have a decent Anti-Virus/Anti-Spyware then imo windows defender just takes resources and should be disabled.

If you are happy that your current security software will do the job to disable windows defender got to Start->Type in services->click the entry services with the 2 cogs next to it->a new window like the picture will appear, scroll down to "Windows Defender" and double click it->In the new window select "Disabled" from the drop-down->Click Apply then Stop.
Windows Defender will now not start on next re-boot.
