BBC News Redesign

Much furore over the Beeb's redesign of its news pages.

First an example of the new look:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-10641910

Far too much wasted space for me, you have to scroll down forever to read as much content as before.

An example of an old style page:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/sussex/7555068.stm

Editor's views:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/theeditor...edesign_2.html

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/theeditor...edesign_3.html

The Creative Director's spin:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/bbcinternet/

Comments on all 3 pages are interesting!

Personally, although some of the changes are good, the majority make navigating the pages far less efficient...

Re: BBC News Redesign

I actually really like the new design, sooo much cleaner. old design is WAYYYY too cluttered. However they still have sooo much wasted real estate due to their instance on fixing the width to bee optimum for 800px. it would bee much better if they allowed the page to streach for wider screens

Re: BBC News Redesign

My theory on the white space caused by one sentence paragraphs is (as hinted at in the Creative Director's piece) that they want you to scroll more so that you pass all the ads if viewing the Worldwide site.

Re: BBC News Redesign

I already had a rant in the Moans thread.I HATE it..

And when I finally get used to it all they will pigging well change all over again..

---------- Post added at 21:26 ---------- Previous post was at 21:23 ----------

Fresh updated? all they did was move the left hand links to the top..and why so much red on the front page?

---------- Post added at 21:28 ---------- Previous post was at 21:26 ----------

And this is really pants

I'm now waiting for them to drag h2g2-The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy into line with the rest of the site

Again, all that white space is probably where the ads go on BBC Worldwide...

Re: BBC News Redesign

I was a bit shocked by it when I landed on it the other day. I like the general look and feel, but I still prefer the links on the left hand side instead of the top. Its not great usability to have links at the top, as thats usually where the breadcrumbs go. the rest of the site does look cleaner and less cluttered though.

Re: BBC News Redesign

With some clever javascript and the use of layers it is possible to have a floating links bar, top, left, right, where ever you want it. Really handy so that the links to the rest of site are always available without scrolling back. Pity Auntie Beeb didn't incorporate this.

Maybe their developers were incapable of a simple Google search
eg: floating links javascript layers

oh dear god "floty" anything is just ugly and reminds me of 97 when "fancy" effects were used just for the hell of it.

It's been redesigned so they have one page design for UK & Worldwide. Therefore they need the white space at the sides to hold adverts.

What I find annoying is that each sentence has become a paragraph with blank lines between them. Means you have to scroll forever to finish an article, plus it seems to make it disjointed & harder to read...
