Asda buys Netto for £778m

An interesting deal which will give ASDA smaller stores in the community.

Supermarket group ASDA is paying £778m to take control of the Netto discount grocery chain in an aggressive bid to close the gap with market leader Tesco.
The UK's second biggest grocer, which is part of the Wal-Mart global retail empire, is buying 193 stores – subject to getting the go-ahead from the Office of Fair Trading competition watchdog. The purchase price is the equivalent of £4m for each Netto outlet.

Re: Asda buys Netto for £778m

778million for a shop I never heard off

if asda are wondering why they losing sales I can say here why I moved to tesco 3 weeks ago.

1 - initially it was the sudden removal of products to be replaced by alternatives that were double or more the price.
2 - also the times when I had very poor dates, such as less than 3 days on bread.
3 - damaged/missing items started becoming common during the past couple of months, after a bit of googling it seemed to coincide with a decision by asda to make their delivery guys do double the deliveries. explains why they were always in a rush then.
4 - and finally more sudden removals of items of their website but this time not replaced by alternatives, on my last asda order I had to pick alternatives for half of my regular items, they simply said unavailable.

As a comparison tesco have tons of extra choice on their site, can even buy those nice ready made sandwich packs I love.
Tesco turn up on time, asda were also always late on afternoon deliveries.
Tesco dont rush me to take bags in and even offer to carry them in for me.
Tesco have a later change your mind time, I can change my mind about 4 hours before delivery due.
Tesco seem to have better dates.

The only annoyance I have so far is tesco crisps are aweful compared to asda, tried walkers crisps and they worse then asda crisps as well, so for now having pringles. Tesco sandwich spread is much nicer than asda tho also their quiche's nicer.

If this goes ahead you may be able to get your crisps locally.

They are buying 193 stores for £778 million around about 4 million per store.

Re: Asda buys Netto for £778m

I wonder if Asda are going to be doing what the Co-op have done recently when they bought up all the Alldays stores and converted most of them to little local corner shop style Co-ops.They have been very successful round here.
Also the Tesco Express stores all seem to have gone down well too.Seems like a good way to go.After all how many of us have lost the little independent corner shops to big supermarkets? It would be nice to be able to get back to walking to the nearest supermarket instead of driving when we only want a few items.

most of the netto stores are probably a tad big to be turned into corner style shops

Netto's stores average only 8,000 sq ft – compared to Asda's 46,000 sq ft average superstore.

Re: Asda buys Netto for £778m

I am seriously naffed off about this. Netto beats the socks off both Asda and Tesco on the prices front. I did a weekly shop this morning and on branded goods I probably saved getting on for 30% and on fruit and veg about 50% for better quality produce.

I'm not a happy bunny.

we have all 3 in Nuneaton although if Asda do get the go ahead Netto is bound to close as its only a stones through away from the local Asda

If they kept the NETTO name maybe not but if they want an ASDA LOCAL then stores like that would have to close.

they would also have to keep the netto branding and cheapo nasty stock list or its pointless. The stores are virtually next door all there is is a 5 minute or less walk and a railway station between them lol

They do stock many mainstream brands but overall I would rather shop in ALDI than NETTO, better quality and cheaper prices.

Re: Asda buys Netto for £778m

Netto, unlike Aldi and Lidl, carry a lot of recognised brands at highly discounted prices. If my local store becomes an Asda Local store I would expect all the prices to go up in the same way that the stock in the local Tesco Express is dearer than the main Tesco store located a couple of miles away.
