graphics overclock

im currently trying to overclock my gtx 280 and was wondering what would be the best test, to do to see if it is stable.

i am currently using 3dmark 06 and the temps are fine etc not getting any issue's, at all my scores are increasing but i would like to know if there is anything better than 3dmark 06 to stress the gpu to see if it is stable or not.

cooling should not be a issue as i have it watercooled with the card on its own water loop connected to a dual radiator, temps at the moment are not going above 55c when running 3dmark 06.

---------- Post added at 15:33 ---------- Previous post was at 15:26 ----------

also i am now hitting some quite high speeds core at over 700mhz from stock of 615mhz, still running fine.

Re: graphics overclock

well the results seem to be in as riva tuner won't allow me to take it any further specs below:

stock
core: 615mhz
shader: 1350mhz
memory: 1107mhz
3dmark06 score of 18000

overclocked
core: 750mhz
shader: 1536mhz
memory: 1350mhz
3dmark 06 score of 18717

lets try crysis now

Re: graphics overclock

well not only that but it has shaved time of the folding at home it has knocked nearly an hour of the time quoted for the current work unit.

Re: graphics overclock

Fur Mark will stress your card, but the temps will be a lot higher than what you'll see in real-world tests.

You might also want to try increasing the core voltage using the EVGA Voltage Tuner. Theres a patch out there that will unlock it to work on all vendors.

You should be safe up to around 1.2v

Re: graphics overclock

is it really worth it. i mean, reeeeeally???... you truly will not see any humanly noticable difference when playing a game to be fair. the only way you'll know it's alittle bit faster is by looking at a frame rate figure or 3dMark score.

I honestly thought the days of overclocking died in the early 00's.

Re: graphics overclock

Not at all, not unless you've been hiding under a rock.

You're right in part though, overclocking is usually pointless especially on high end gear where frame rates are already high.

But it does have its benefits on games such as Crysis, for example, my GTX295 was averaging 55fps at stock clocks (forget the min fps) and maxing out at 65, overclocked, it's now averaging 65 FPS, maxing at 75 and the min FPS has risen enough so that the game is now smooth with no stutter at all (due to min FPS) on full detail. Some people think that might be worth attaining, including me

Not to forget though, to some, it's a hobby to see how much you can get out of your system... Just because one person thinks overclocking is a pointless activity doesn't mean that there aren't people out there who enjoy getting the most out of their system and tweaking every last bit.

Re: graphics overclock

I played and finished Crysis a long time ago also the stand alone expansion. I do not think ill heavily overlcock my system to play it again lol. AF and AA are all well and good but with details high anyway with new GFX cards and the games fast paced I am to busy concentrating on the game than a few jaggies. I had my play with overclocking but I am not prepared to spend loads of cash on water cooling systems top end £600 cpus and £200+ motherboards just to wave my willy around a few forums

The main benefit Damien has found is in folding@home woopie doo all that extra stress and power for something that he isnt even there to benefit from

Re: graphics overclock

well with the overclock my fps jumped up in crysis but call of duty games didn't like it, but the overclock now only gets put on when either playing crysis or doing the folding.
