Re: Slow connection
Just off the horn with VM tech support he told me to power down the modem for one hour, whilst on the phoned the rep told me to download a movie and see the transfer rate. Little did he know I was downloading a 1GB file from http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/blueyondergames/.

I usually say power of the modem for about 10 seconds when I want the modem rebooted so i assume you spoke to our offshore colleagues.
Here is how to use the gamefiles site.
-------------------------------------------------------------
If you are a Virgin Media customer then the best speedtest is from the link below.
Have you tried going to this link to check your speeds http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/
click on blueyondergames>demos>then click on at least 2 large files around 400/500 mb and save them to your desktop, and then wait a couple of minutes then write down the transfer rates on the files that are running > times them by 8 and you will get a truer download speed.
Remember to stop and delete the files.
i.e : 250kBps X 8 = 2MB, 500kBps X 8 = 4MB, 1250kBps X 8 = 10MB, 2500kBps X 8 = 20MB

Re: Slow connection
Yeah to be hones I have a server that is in the UK at the speeds from that are terribe also the speeds from the http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/ are also slow topping out at 350k sec used Flashget to increase the speed went upto 401k sec.

Oh, just downloaded a file of a Gige news with 100 connections up downloaded at full 20mbit so it seems like it is localised by the looks of things then again if we could all open 100 connections to servers our connection speed would be great.

Well you should be getting 20MB, try Tech Support.

Re: Slow connection
Right, last couple days connection has been very poor indeed. I am in Belfast too. I am supposed to be on 10meg cable, and i have tv and phone in there too. I started noticing the problems when I started to get alot more lag than usual in some computer games I play online. Then tonight it was horrendously bad. So I ran some traceroutes to two hosts, one in Sweden and one in German, who both I always get excellent quality with zero lag, and now they both bring up poor results.

I have checked the settings on the modem, and all settings seem to be within normal paramaters. I have ran SpeedTest and all sorts of speedtests, and the results are up and down like a yo-yo. Sometimes only getting 1.5mb, sometimes 4mb, sometimes 2mb, and even getting pings of 140 to london on speedtest! (I ran these traceroutes around 10:30pm)
Ideas? Any other IPs I can run a traceroute to vrigin media?
Cheers

Re: Slow connection
I don't understand any of the above - what are you talking about! I have been looking at the Virgin site trying to work out why my internet connection is suddenly sooo slow and stumbled on this site. I thought the slow connection had something to do with switching yesterday from norton to avg but maybe not!

Re: Slow connection
Well, just off the phone again to VM. I can download full pelt up until 5pm after 5pm to 1am my connection slows right down when trying to download any file. For example my server is in france and it is on a 100mbit line www.ciaranmarley.com/test/ the download speed is 200k sec. Going to http://fuller.zen.co.uk/test the speed is still slow my brother who hardly ever downloads has the same issue.
