Wondering if I can change my IP# with this
Verizon Wireless UM150 USB Modem
Can anyone tell me if I can use this to continually change my IP address? I would also like to know if there would be any other hardware I might need to use it and how much it would cost. I am pretty new to all of this technical stuff. Can anyone explain to me what the monthly allowance is about? I am trying to find a way to change my IP on a laptop whenever I want. Thanks for all your help!

Re: Wondering if I can change my IP# with this
People use this forum of their own accord, no-one is obliged to help and no-one is paid to do so either. Most of us have jobs during the day so help might be a little slow until later.
A little patience might server you better.

Why would you need to be constantly changing your ip?
Also you don't state what provider your with, if your on a cable modem or a adsl modem to start with etc. That's perhaps why people have not answered as your question cannot be answered with the information given. Also some of the views will be from search engine spiders..

Handyman - a quick google suggests the OP is trying to use a '3G' mobile modem on the Verizon US network.
Doubt wether anyone on a UK cable forum knows anything about Verizon.

Only that they're marginally better than Comcast.
Since it's a 'mobile modem' I'd imagine you get an IP from the available pool in whatever area you connect from.
Perhaps the answer is to keep on trucking...

Re: Wondering if I can change my IP# with this
I apologize for the confusion. Like I stated before, I have no idea what I am talking about here. Thanks for your responses. I am looking for this info because a friend asked me something about it. So lets say if I was just downtown or out and about, this thing can be used to link up to Verizons network? So it would kind of work like WIFI? Would there be any other hardware needed to use it? Thanks again...

Once again I apologize, and no I hadn't realized your UK based until after my second post. Please forgive me, I was a little tired and aggravated at the time. Sorry I acted in such a manner, I had been up all night and needed to get some sleep...obviously. I do appreciate all of your help.

thats OK , now you know theres a time difference there, there are some US members that post here, so they may or not know the Verizon network sequence better.
you basic question , can you use it for portable and reasonable web browsing, YES you can.
do you understand how your mobile phone works to some degree?, its much like that.
you need one of these, in this case EV-DO Rev A wireless network card such as you ask about, heres a review with its spec and speed when they tested it on your mentioned Verizon.
just like the mobile phone you also need a valid mobile carrier SIM card, that plugs into this mobile modem.
you get the SIM registered with your provider and they tell you the settings (you put into the supplyed PC mobile network app that came with the mobile modem) to use for the connection.... done.
you should then be able to plug it into your laptop and off you go.
"Download speeds averaged 670 Kbps with peaks of 1.77 Mbps. The UM150 came in third on upload speed tests, with average speeds of 403 Kbps and peaks of 817 Kbps"

Re: Wondering if I can change my IP# with this
My understanding of mobile data cards is that you open an context, get an IP address, and then keep that IP address for the duration of the context even if you move about and change coverage areas.
There are standards for SGSN handover to let you do this.
So no you cannot change your IP address without restarting your context, e.g power cycling your card. Even then whether you get a new one or not depends on the set up of the DHCP server and how long it caches your mac address.
