COD4 and racism on live.
As an older gamer who really enjoys playing on Xbox live the one thing that makes me angry is the casual racist comments I keep hearing. And surprisingly to me at least, is that the vast majority of this comes from squeaky voice young boys, I would have thought that in this day and age youngsters would have this drummed into them from an early age.
Also not wanting to sound xenophobic, it does seem to be more of a problem with young American boys who seem to have a particular liking for abusing anyone with anti-jewish or anti-black insults. As regards "filing a complaint" against these morons, its pointless, all you can do is tick a box with just 3 choices and as far as I can see nothing ever comes of it. There is no way I would let a child of mine play on-line with the headset on unless they were playing with friends.

What was it before?
And Frogstamper, this is just not young american lads, sadly i know plenty of people around my age and younger who think it's fine to make anti-semitic and racist remarks. And not just against blacks (What do we call these people these days without feeling racist btw?) i hear allsorts from "gooks" to well... I'll leave it out. Every minority gets picked on. It's bloody disgraceful.

Re: COD4 and racism on live.
Something along the lines of "I don't hate frogs, my name is just to wind up French people"
Basically its OK to be racist against French people but when Americans do it, you have to draw the line. According to the OP anyway.

Actually I changed my sig a couple of days ago, Id like to think I'm not that petty, I would have kept the whole sig in but as you know your restricted to four lines. Also I cant see how you can compare a comment like "I wouldn't really stamp on my little green friends its just a jibe for the French on live" with downright anti-semitic comments on live. I don't object to being called a limey, as much as American friends of mine don't object to being called a yank, I'm not talking about "banter" but outright racist hatred. As far as singling out American youth, of course I'm not referring to them all, I'm just speaking as I find.

Re: COD4 and racism on live.
Back to the point of the thread. I have noticed several times that americans and canadians seem to think it's cool to call each other and others in the room by the 'N' word.
I would say, file the complaint, if they get enough about a particular gamertag, they may actually do something. You may think it does no good, but if several pop up against a certain user then they should do something about them.

Funny you should mention this particular 'N' word - only yesterday whilst watching a friend play I was listening on his headset to american guys while what can only be described as the KKK discussing if it would be appropriate to use the 'N' word

Re: COD4 and racism on live.
I personally think the use of the N word should be acceptable. It seems really odd that coloured people can call each other the N word but if a white person uses the word its like "omg how dare you"
Ive had 38 years of people take the mick out of my red hair calling me ginger nut or ginga ninja or the like I personally do not take this offensively however I would like someone to come up with something original. If some coloured bloke started taking the rip out out me calling me names and I was to say P off N word and a copper heard me I would get done and I feel thats not fair
The N word actually dates back over 2000 years and simply means black in latin

I quite agree Zing, for a long time white people have been too easy a target.
But on the occasion i mentioned above, it was a discussion putting the feelers out seeing if any black people were playing and then delved even deeper, so much so my friend left the lobby. It was quite eerie to hear in this day and age

AGHHHHH
Context, it's not the word, it's the context. It's sometimes deemed ok when the recipent considers the context of the word inoffensive. So from a friend as a jibe or from another black person that they know. Even then it depends on the person.
However if it was received from some random person in the street then the context is suddenly hostile and therefore is quite understandly viewed as a racist remark.
In Lanuage, context really is everything. You cannot take the word, remove it from all context, and still make the same point as if all that mattered was the word itself.

Re: COD4 and racism on live.
if that was the case why did Big brother make such a fuss last year ? it was an innocent statement made naively. Btw I do not mean Jade Goody I mean the other one
If someone coloured come up to me and said im a f word ing ginger haired B word and I said P word off N word and a copper heard it and decided to arrest us both he would perhaps get done for disturbing the peace or affray and they would cook up some racial hatred charge against me

Because people are stupid, or at least some are. However, I would say the majority of people and press deemed the incident not racist and channel 4 were accused of being over sensitive. Let's remember it happened following the Jade Goody incident on C4 went OTT to avoid a repeat of that incident.

Well, that's a unlikely set of events to happen isn't it? A black person decides to randomly starting hurling abuse at you, in front of a cop, and you insult them back.
If the cop heard the whole thing then I think it's likely you would not be charged as it was incited. You could however get a idiotic cop or department and find that happen. Sometimes life screws you over like that, but it's hardly an example of a big problem is it?
