Golden age of pirate radio stations

Today l sat down and watched the film 'The boat that rocked' about a pirate radio ship, reminded me about the great days of pirate radio with Laser 558, and as far as l know, the ship the Communicator is still about somewhere.

Does anyone have any memories of the golden age.

Used to love listening to Radio Caroline. Was the first or second called the `Mi Amigo`? Ah ok, got it now.

I've also got a very vivid memory of what it was like before Radio Caroline.The only station that ever regularly played rock or pop was Luxembourg and half the time the transmitter would fade out for about 2 minutes.This meant I would only get about half of a song at a time..The only time we got any such songs on the Beeb was on Children's Choice on a Saturday and most of the time it was mixed in with crap like The Laughing Policeman.

Radio Caroline was the answer to a prayer and when the PTB gave in and allowed the Beeb to set up Radio 1, I was over the moon.I can remember the very first broadcast and the tune that Tony Blackburn played on the very first Breakfast Show which was Flowers in the Rain by the Move.

I used to remember driving through Oxford at 5am in the morning come home to London and the first tune l heard on Laser 558 in the morning, was Abba ' I CAN HEAR THE MUSIC' totally great, to can forget the radio stations of today, the only station that come very close to Laser 'now' is the old Capital Gold at 1548, in the early days they used to have Capital Gold Sport, they don't have that now.

wasn't tony blackburn on radio caroline before the beeb or am i getting mixed up ?

What's that got to do with my memory of the first legit radio station aimed at the youf of the time?

As I understand it Radio 1 was a response to getting Caroline off the airways which succeeded because so many of the DJs opted to get back on terra firma.

Most certainly do! My favourite station was Radio Nova in Ireland which was (like the majority of the rest) shut down be the "authorities". At that time there was nothing on the air to touch it
