Smokers 'make their children ill'

A leading hospital says up to a third of the children it treats for certain conditions are ill because their parents smoke in front of them.

I would have thought that was pretty obvious. ::Link::

Re: Smokers 'make their children ill'
It is, and yet people continue to smoke in front of their children.
I knew a 4 year old who smoked, because his parents did he thought it was fine.
His mum would lock him out of the house to kip during the day (we lived on a compound) and he came to our villa asking if his mum was there.
My mum answered (I was at school) and found him with a cigarette in his mouth so marched him home and banged on the door until his mum answered.
She had a right go at his mum, but all she did in return was look at her son and say "Oh you're so naughty"

Re: Smokers 'make their children ill'
Well I know im gonna get flamed for this but there is no one more ignorant to the dangers of smoking than a selfish smoker. I highlight selfish and direct it to those who have no consideration for the none smoker( People who smoke around there children Women who smoke whilst pregnant. Those who smoke whilst driving etc) Those who stop whilst pregnant, those who go outside to smoke leaving their house fresh and the like I do not class as selfish smokers

I agree. Most smokers that I know will go to a "private" place to smoke - not in front of children, not in my house or car, etc. As usual, a few selfish individuals can give the majority a bad name.

do you mean in an accident or by pollution? if its an accident then its a twist of the fates if its pollution then I will not disagree as I do not drive. A smoker makes a conscience choice to smoke in the childs environment and therefore willingly harms a child , does the term child abuse fit well I for one would argue yes. You would not be a smoker by chance? if so do you smoke in the same room as children?

Re: Smokers 'make their children ill'
So starts the campaign to ban smoking in the home as well as public places and with at least one council looking to ban it outside in public it is a campaign.

Do you not think it's a good idea to ban smoking infront of non-smokers?

There is a guy who has a smoke in the mornings in the parking area next to my local train station. If I stand downwind of him, I can smell the smoke. When he gets on the train (without a cigarette) he smells of smoke.
There is no designated smoking area, so what is he supposed to do? Somehow I don't think it would be fair to ban him from smoking, as he is making an effort. I get more worked up by people who put their feet on the seats.

Re: Smokers 'make their children ill'
Smokfree Homes has been on the agenda for a while http://www.smokefreeliverpool.com/
I have no problems with people who choose to smoke provided they don't inflict it up on others who don't, including the young and disabled.

Depends how you wish to implement it If you just mean banning smokers from standing next to non smokers on streets, train platforms etc, then that may be hard to implement.
It would be easier if the government adjusted the current ban to allow for designated (and enforced) smoking areas. Thus, people who wanted to could smoke, and people who didn't, didn't have to.
Of course, implementing such a system on the rail network would require us to go back to fully staffed railway stations, which I doubt will happen anytime soon.
