Anyone work in HR? What do you make of this?

Hey people
Advice and opinion time!
I went for an interview 3 weeks ago, and it went great! But I did not get the job as they thought I was to good for it which was quite nice in a strange sort of way and I was told they were hoping to create me a position as they had been impressed.

I heard nothing but now I have been invited to a meeting in a couple of weeks.

Now this is great but I just want some advice, ethically from a HR point of view can someone just be created a job and offered it at a meeting?
I guess im just curious and excited to see what the meetings about......but ive not heard of this being done before.

Any opinions of experiences of this? of guesses of what this could be about?
Hr professionals views?

Thanks people

First, well done, you must have impressed them.

Creating positions to move somebody internally is not unheard of, especially when there are head count reductions. Gone are the days of last in first out, any company worth their salt will want to keep the best performers. So having a job created to bring somebody in shouldn't be an issue.

I don't think there is any ethical problem here, your face fits, the company recognise this, and they want you to have a foot in the door.

My HR concern is that everywhere else Ive worked the HR department would want to advertise and interview to ensure everything is ethical. Even when working my way up through the companis I have had to apply for the jobs rather than be slotted in, Ive had a day off my current job so I just hope im not building myself up for a fall.

Re: Anyone work in HR? What do you make of this?

Well, technically, my employer created the position that I've now got - my predecessor was doing it as a 'Special Projects'-type of thing, whereas I'm doing it in an 'official' capacity. Mid you, I had to leave for 3½ years for them to do it

Ethically, there's nothing wrong with it - you've obviously impressed them enough to want you regardless, so good on you and well done

No no, his job's fine - it's just that he'd never had an assistant before

There's no law that says they have to ... in the absence of any agreement they may have with a trade union representing any of their existing staff (which might, for example, require them to advertise posts internally before offering them outside), they can do what they want.

Be flattered, but don't forget, when you go back, it's still an interview situation, and they may bring someone else into the meeting who you didn't meet last time. So dress to impress and give it your all.

Thats the thing I dont know that they are going to offer me anything, Im hoping they will, I wonder why they would invite me back to a meeting just to say well done on the interview, but I just dont want to build myself up to nothing there.
A few people have said they would not waste their time if they did not have something to tell you a few have said they can not offer anything ethically.
Who knows! Nervous!

From what you've said, it does sound like there's something to be offered. As Towny said, treat it like a formal interview, and see what happens. At the end of the day, you'll lose nothing by going back

Definetly going to treat it like another interview, they are very senior people who im meeting one who was at the interview and another who was not. Just really want them to offer me something, im doing lots of prep work for the interview.

Re: Anyone work in HR? What do you make of this?

Firstly Congrats... As I agree with previous posts that they wouldn't bother inviting you back for no reason (if it was just a pat on the back a phone call could suffice right?).

Now private industry is greatly different than public sector "companies". I work in the NHS and I've applied for a temporary secondment to cover a colleague's maternity leave.

My department have had to advertise (albeit internal only) to allow me to go for it - as HR told them they had to (previous thoughts were to just give me the job as I do it already alongside said colleague - at a lower pay band).

So I don't think it's an ethical issue as such - more a company policy thing - they may have no such policy as to advertise internal before external etc. It's brilliant that they liked you so much they'd even tell you straight out that they want to create you a position especially.

I also work in the NHS and its common practice to advertise internally only as someone is already in mind for a post. Ethically I think its a pointless exercise if the decision is already made, i get the impression its done to tick some boxes.

Good luck pop80_uk, sounds like you're onto a winner there Go to your 'meeting' full of enthusiasm and knock em' dead

Re: Anyone work in HR? What do you make of this?

Thanks guys for all your comments, I just am really flattered by it all.

I know it sounds like a cliche but things like this dont usually hapen to people like me.

It is in the public sector, local goverment, do you think that will make a difference?
