Virgin Withdraw 4Mb Broadband?

I have been under the impression that I was on the 4Mb service offered by NTL for the past couple of months. However I've noticed that my download speeds have dropped a great deal over the past weeks.

When visiting the site today I was looking at the news on the Virgin Media re-brand: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/article/...s-virgin-media

It does not seem to list a 4Mb service at all, just the up to 2Mb service. What's happened to the 4Mb option?

---------- Post added at 13:42 ---------- Previous post was at 13:40 ----------

I just noticed I was looking under the special offers section. 4Mb is listed under the broadband section.

I already have the TV, Phone, Broadband package, is it likely they've switched me on to one of these packages without asking and taking away 2Mbs from me in the process?

Re: Virgin Withdraw 4Mb Broadband?

They shouldn't have, but it might be worth phoning customer services to find out if they have.

Re: Virgin Withdraw 4Mb Broadband?

Anyone have any idea for such a drop in service then? I see other threads complaining about it. It's affecting my online gaming! That is just not acceptable :0p

Hi,

I doubt they have taken 2MB away from you when the companies merged, as per the Virgin Media website you can see that your 4MB connection is still offered by the company, they have just renamed it to Broadband Size: L. Whereas the 2MB connections is Size: M.

Check your modems config file by going to 192.168.100.1 from Internet Explorer, suggest not using another browser as my Modem doesn't like any browser but Internet Explorer.

Post the Downstream and Upstream rates here, and we might be able to help you out further, also check a recent bill to see how much your paying and compare it to the price of the services on the website above.

Thanks, Andrew Robinson.

Re: Virgin Withdraw 4Mb Broadband?

seeing as he's saying its affecting his gaming i'm assuming its causing lag, being on a 2mb service wont cause lag in any games so again i'm going to assume he's seeing 2mb due to congestion and not any modem config being set to 2mb, a tracert to bbc.co.uk would help see if it is congestion or not

Re: Virgin Withdraw 4Mb Broadband?

I'm on the 4MB (L) service, here's my results of the speed test:
Mon, 12 Feb 2007 21:03:27 UTC

1st 512K took 1156 ms = 442.9 KB/sec, approx 3649 Kbps, 3.56 Mbps
2nd 512K took 1281 ms = 399.7 KB/sec, approx 3294 Kbps, 3.22 Mbps
3rd 512K took 1282 ms = 399.4 KB/sec, approx 3291 Kbps, 3.21 Mbps
4th 512K took 1156 ms = 442.9 KB/sec, approx 3649 Kbps, 3.56 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 3471 Kbps, 3.39 Mbps

Trying it several times it did go as low as 2 Mbps...

Modem config:
Downstream frequency 331000000 Hz/Bit Rate 4096000 bps
Upstream frequency 18800000 Hz/Bit Rate 384000 bps

Does that sound right?

Re: Virgin Withdraw 4Mb Broadband?

Your speed test seems fine. I can't really help you with the modem config as I've never been able to access it because I have a Terayon.
