Is there an upgrade programme for recent purchasers of 10.4? My dad has a new iMac, less than a month old.

As per Tiger, there isn't anything revolutionary on there... I'll wait a few months and get a cheap OEM copy on ebay like I did last time.

Yea, im not 100% sure i like the new look, bit 50/50 on it, looks very much like vista to me, and that's a huge turn off,but the beta crashed on mysetup so i dont know, will just have to wait till its out i guess.

Too bad you cant use compiz-fusion on macs, otherwise id buy a mac straight away

Nope. Not in the US anyway. In a bizarre coincidence my brother is toying (or may have already bought last night) an imac. I told him to ask the Mac guys if they'd give him a free copy of Leopard and they said no.

However, when I bought my powerbook (in the US) it actually came with Jaguar pre-installed and they gave me a free copy of Panther. I might have actually bought it after Panther was released, I can't remember.

They usually do but you may have missed the cut-off date.

Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. I suspect they will be wanting to get as much money out of this release as possible, seeing as it's taken far longer than scheduled to get it out.

On your point about it not being revolutionary - it's not supposed to be. Apple OS upgrades are evolutionary, not revolutionary. Microsoft favours the revolution approach ... and Vista is a cack-handed mess.

It has some nice touches I would like to have, such as the extension of the album art browser used in iTunes to the Finder, and the ability to roll back to older versions of files (how often I've done a 'save' and then wished I hadn't ... ). As you say though, I will wait a while and then hit eBay.

Can you get a OEM version for OSX. It's not like there are mac system builders?

There is not anything major in this release (I would argue spotlight was a big one in the last release though). There is a lot of developer stuff that makes this a good release for a Intel Computer since it contains multi-core apps and 64-bit apps.

I do not like the cover flow for finder, but the rest of finder looks good. That is, without a doubt, the most needed improvement for the mac. I hope it will be

The coverflow thing is nice, but i've gone this far in my life without it so a few more months isn't going to hurt.

Time Machine, which looks like a weird hybrid of Microsoft's System Restore and a disk imaging program is no good to me as it seems you need a separate external drive.

The preview thing seems to be slower than opening the file in the first place as you have to click it then go upto the top to click the eye icon.

I don't use ichat or mail. The spaces looks OK, but as I don't do hardcore work (that's for my desktop) then I probably won't use that much.

Plus the fact, contrary to public opinion Tiger did slow my powerbook down, and my little 1ghz PPC G4 is struggling enough already, and is right on the cusp of compatibility. Soeaking of which...

At least 9 GB of disk space available
They are having a laugh aren't they?

Still for compiz-fusion you can always reformat and stick a copy of Ubuntu on there I think I might do eventually actually. as it seems Tiger is as far as I can go.

Re: Mac OS 10.5 to be released 26th October

I had a quick play with Leopord a while back (I know a couple of people who were on the beta), and while I missed a lot, I didn't find anything that made me desperate enough to part with £60 for it (yes, working for a Uni, I qualify for student discount).

Having said that, I have found Apple do have a habit of coming up with handy little functions that you don't initially think would be useful, then when you get used to them and they go, you really miss them.

This is it. I have one machine running 10.3 and one with 10.4. I was never compelled to upgrade the 10.3 machine to 10.4, nor am I tempted to shell out for 10.5. Generally, the upgrades are marginal imo.

I dont see the point on a G4 system yet. Like I said, a lot of the add ons are to developers like the new version of xcode and objective-C. 9GB Must be due to having it as a universal binary. Wait for an app to remove the Intel code i guess (also it's properly if you install everything..)

Yep, It seems at least 3GB is developer tools and documentation

http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/300.html#bootcamp

Some new features in there now. I like the grammer check, guest accounts, sandboxed apps, spotlight will now highlight the top add so its quicker to open. dotMac syncs of system preferences and dock/wallpapers.

I like the stacks and other desktop improvements too.

All small features but nice ones.

Ooh, you are so right about that ... the number of times I squeeze my mouse on this rotten PC at work and then get frustrated when my open windows don't suddenly shrink and spread out so I can see them all ...

Exposé rocks!
