Failing that what options do I have?

Re: Virgin setup on Vista

If you use your ethernet cable instead of a USB cable you wont need the NTL software disk. (I think).

Failing that you could always go wireless.

Vista will eat your system, warning it uses a minimum of 500MB in RAM

That's another point. I struggle with Vista sometimes and I have 2gb RAM. I like the OS though but, as trevortt said it's a RAM eater.

Well its a Dual Core 2 machine with 1gig standard so ive got a decent starting point. Will probably upgrade to 2gig within a week or so.

So you think I can just plug the ethernet cable in without giving it details of my acc?

Aye, although if I am wrong (Which I don't think I am) someone on here will correct me.

Sorry, the communion wine is going right to my head just now.

You should be just fine. I was connected via ethernet and I didn't need the CD.

Unplug the modem. Plug the new laptop in, plug the modem back into the mains, and via Ethernet to the laptop. It should just work.

Odd, even though I selected Ethernet, it still seemed to Install 'something' when I first connected. It also asked for userID etc.. I take it thats only needed to activate the account 1st time around?

Re: Virgin setup on Vista

To my knowledge, you don't need to install anything to connect via ethernet. It should just work. As I said above I may be slightly incorrect, been with Virgin aka NTL for 5 years and not once have I used my CD to connect by ethernet. I don't know what it has installed, but you defo don't need it.

You may have to install your ethernet drivers but Vista usually does nto upon startup anyway.

Thanks fella's. I'll probably create a restore point and try without the driver CD first.

That's right, once your modem is registered to your userID you can happliy change it between different PCs without any messing. You just need to remember to power cycle the modem when changing.
